I’ve been reaaaaaaaaaly down in the dumps the last two/three days, and I gotta say, I’ve never laughed so hard in a movie in my entire life.  I didn’t laugh much yesterday, wasn’t exactly what you call a good day, but when me, my mom, and aunt watched shrek in my room at 8PM, I was happy again!  Truly, has anyone seen a movie funnier than this?  My lungs and hands were hurting at the end of this movie!

What I loved the most was all the quite subtle jokes through out the film.  Jokes that only adults could understand.  Like when the jinger bread cookie says “eat me”… I couldn’t stop laughing!  And when shrek blew up the frog to give to the princess, and then she made him a ballon out of the snake… FUNNY!  Hehe, I know I’m sounding lame now, but I’ve never laughed so hard in my life.

The end was the best though, when they had this huge music parody.  When donkey started singing “I like big BUTTS and I can not lie, you other brothers cant deny” *Jon at that moment died laughing*

Anyway, I give this a 10/10… what everyone else think of it?   :)

I love it, I have the DVD of Shrek and it's a sensational film. The only animated film I would rate higher is Toy Story. Shrek sure is funny as Bart182 mentioned and The digital picture transfer onto DVD is breath taking, Eddie Murphy does a great voice as the Donkey. To sum up I rate this film 92/100.

I really liked the movie, and all the work that goes into it to make it that was was great. I also own the DVD and I really like the Technical goofs with the warped Donkey and Shrek faces.

Great movie.  Funny as heck - "Shine your shoes, wipe your . . . face."  I wasn't all that impressed with the opening sequence, but the movie just kinda grows on ya.  And I'm not sure how much more Disney-bashing they could have gotten away with, which is great in my book.  But what Shrek did best, IMHO, was it's use of intertwining images - like the guys grabbing the pitchforks turning into Shrek picking up the spoon, and especially the sequence where "Halelujah" by Rufus Wainwright is playing and Fiona and Shrek are being torn apart internally.  Sheer brilliance.  Also, the soundtrack was exceptional, each song fitting perfectly into its placement.

I loved the movie. One of the best parts was the Kareoke at the end, especially when the Prince says: Stayin' Alive... Stayin' ALive! inside the dragons stomach. Can't wait for the sequal. Eddie Murphy is wayyy better when you can't see him.

I don't think they can do a sequal - Shrek was about and its success was in challenging the should-be's of fairy tales - I don't think they can duplicate that.

nix, they ARE doing a sequel.

The more I think about it the less I like it.  Not to rain on everyone's parade or anything.  The story seemed kinda... um exactly the thing they were pretending to mock.  Good thing she turned out ugly like Shrek or else that would have been a little too "weird" for the kiddies eh?  wouldn't want to encourage biracial relationships or anything now.  :gets down off bitchybox:

Shrek is fantastic. So nice to see a really good movie without 45 minutes of Disney promos before it.
That "I like big butts" got me in hysterics.
I thought the development of the dragons' character was the best I've seen in ages.

I refuse to vote because there isn't an option that says 'get more and more annoying as it becomes more popular' I used to find it very amusing, and we own it on DVD, but I am growing really sick and tired of it. I agree with VF.

And I will agree with Rach and VF...kinda. I don't know, I liked it. It was a surprisingly funny little kiddie movie. But it's not THAT great. Plus the Monkees out-rock Smash Mouth any day.

even though Rach was agreeing with me, i will turn around and agree with her, because she put it very nicely.  It's ok, but it doesn't deserve to be so popular.

But that's the thing - it's Beauty and the Beast, only in reverse.

Precisely the reason why I am dead set against a sequel.

i feel that your statement is misleading.  It is "reversed" in the sense that the acceptable norm is ugly, rather than beautiful (as with beauty and the beast).  But by having them both end up the exactly the same (and not even both ugly in seperate, different ways) the story is NOT the reverse of anything.  It is the same old story run the traditional way.  "Normal" person ends up with their own kind.  That was my point.

I guess donkey and the dragon could of been racy, but of course everyone knows cute animal sidekicks don't count

I thought Shrek was good but nothing spectacular.  There were many instances of pop culture thrown in that annoyed me.  The idea to parody all classic tales is very funny but Shrek didn't fully capitalize on it imo.  I still am glad I saw it but I have no urge to see it again.  The ending seemed like a 4 year old wrote it up.

Yea maybe I'm being a little harsh.  Excellent kids film, but it didn't satisfy the hype and rave reviews I was bombarded with when I eventually saw it.  Glad to hear other people liked it more than I did :-/

I got all the "hidden" jokes, all the double-entendres, all the "subtle" jokes, all the "mocking other movies" jokes, and still though it was lame. It was like a string of interconnected, oh-so-obvious sketches. It wasn't that great.

Why did people think it was so funny?

Is it that audiences have become too dumbed-down and now pulling candles out of your ear constitutes an hilarious addition to the film?

Is it that it was a hasty hashed-together-out-of Disneys-rejects movie and all the jokes were about as subtle as someone screaming in your face?

Or is it that although some bits were funny, the movie as a whole didn't seem to gel together, and was simply meant as a lighthearted trip though fairyland for seven-year olds with a couple of bits thrown in to keep their parents entertained that got mistaken for a film for adults with a few bits thrown in to entertain their kids, simply beacuse it contained so little of any real substance???

I thought it was good, really good...
Not the best I've seen but absolutely not the worst    ;)

There were some really hilarious jokes and some less funny. The music was overall quite bad, but the credits-music and the flute music was reall really great. And the voice-overs was really terrific!

It is probably the best computer animated movie i've seen. Some really beautiful scenes, like on the cliff the first night with the princess.

Graphics: 9,5/10
Voice-overs: 9/10
Music: 5/10
Ending: 8/10
Overall rating: 7/10       :D

*bump* So, who's seen Shrek 2? I saw it today and it was a lot better than I thought it would be... almost every movie is getting a sequel, it's nice to see one that's actually well done. Puss in Boots steals the show, definitely. Also, the soundtrack was pretty good (it had a song by one of my favorite bands, Eels). I find it difficult to say this, but now I'm not sure which one of the Shrek movies is better...
