The Internet told me that Browncoats were Firefly fans?
Is this true? - I actaully thought it was something else but 'The Internet' told me fan of Firefly...

And now I notice Firefly threads.
(also off topic, but I've suddenly seen Astro Boy pop up from no where!?)

If we talk about it enough it might come back. Worked for Futurama.

What is it with networks cancelling shows that begin with F? Firefly, Farscape, Futurama, Family Guy...

Didn't Farscape run its course and get a decent ending?

Not really. It was canceled during season 4 which ended on a cliffhanger and it was only due to online petititions and such that allowed the straight to DVD Peace Keeper wars to be released which did end the series.

Bumpity Bump.

If you do get the Science Channel, they are having a 10th anniversary Firefly special with some of the cast at 10 pm EST tomorrow, Nov 11th.  Marathon on during the day, too.

In the latest Dresden Files book, Cold Days, Bob makes a reference joke to Firefly. Funny as it was, that wasn't the hilarious part.

The hilarious part was that Harry was baffled by being unable to recognize it.

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my entire life.

Futurama or Firefly?

Found the DVD for 10 bucks at our local store, and decided to give it a try.
I am somewhat neutral:

- I do not consider Firefly as the greatest Sci Fi series ever (nor the worst).
- A solid series that got it's job done.
- The Western setting was not that groundbreaking or new. ( Already Star Wars borrowed from the Western genre, and in a more subtle, in-universe way).
- I enjoyed the dirty, used look, adding realism. (I always prefered Star Wars or Alien settings over the clean Star Trek backgrounds).
- Unlike in Avengers, the show did not suffer too much from Joss Whedons "Cannot write proper villains to save his life" approach.

So, all in all:
I certainly would not mind going to the store to purchase/watch 1-2 more seasons.
But not being able to do so is also not a major downer.

People class Firefly as a sci-fi series? I mean, don't get me wrong, I fucking love the show, but it's basically just a stylised western... I guess anything set in space automatically warrants the label "sci-fi" these days.

People class Firefly as a sci-fi series?

As "Space Western" is a subgenre of "Sci Fi"...yep.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_%28TV_series%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_western

Also..when elements fade into the background, it will be rather the Western ones. The Sci Fi elements are more constant (especially the hospital raid. Which reminded more of an "Ocean's eleven" variant, instead of a Western. The futurisitic elements and technology did remain, though).

Coldy>Now, now...easy, young Padawn.
It seems you hate that series, and are outraged by the thought others do not share your POV. Yet, while I can see where you find flaws, not EVERYTHING in Firefly is completely bad.
It managed to entertain me...especially as background entertainment when I painted some Warhammer 40K miniatures, and did not have to raise the head for every scene from the drawing table to the TV... :D :D :D :D :p

I'm pretty sure Coldy loves the show, and was arguing against the assertion that it wasn't the greatest ever...

I dont even class StarWars as Sci-Fi, or Babylon 5 , Galactica or FireFly.. they are more like space-operas.. in wich space is just the setting (tought B5 is far more beliable than ST)

Star Trek clutches to Sci-Fi or it tries to keep that banner ,tought is obvious that they abandoned it long ago.. wich is good for them as their trying to be "sci-fi" only meant lame technobabble nonsense

Star Trek is a space western as well, at least the original series. Gene Roddenberry pitched the show as “Wagon Train to the stars”. I would also say that B5 was influenced a lot by fantasy especially Lord of the Rings and the Arthurian legend.

As for shows that do not fit this sort of mold, I am struggling to think of a show that I, at least would consider hard sci fi. After some thought I would perhaps say the anime Planetes where dealing with the impact of science is a major plot point.

Most other shows just use the science as window dressing, which is not always a bad thing as it does allow for controversial topics to be talked about even if it is indirectly (eg suicide bombers in Battlestar)

You could always head-canon it out of existence if it bothered you enough. That's what I'd do.

I hadn't watched Firefly for a few years; watching it again I'm enjoying it just as much as I did before... so many great episodes it is hard to pick any as 'The Best'.

I'm probably the only person who loves Firefly while simultaneously detesting the "western in space" aspect of it.

And I honestly can't even guess how long it's been since I last watched an episode. Thanks for the reminder that I ought to revisit it more frequently.
