Yeap, thats pretty common in sci-fi..
The entire ship looses energy, even to the point that basics like light- heat fail but there is still a good 1G of artificial gravity..
same goes in Star Trek (everytime they board a "adrift disabled ship" its ruined inside, corpses, no energy but the artificial gravity works much fine.. Galactica (when they boarded the "ill-Basestar" )..
Babylon 5 tooks the gravity more seriously , but still falls in same mistakes (there is one episode in season 5 in wich a White Star is totally disabled but still has gravity.. etc) alltought they took it with humour , for example in the spin-off Crusade, it was stated that when the Excalibur fires its main guns it looses all energy for one minute except "life support and gravity".

Also funny is how in many of those shows, when a ship is attacked , someone ussualy dies crushed by falling debri , wich is falling because there is an artificial gravity system working wich didnt failed in the attack.. Killed by technology made for confort...  :D

Reavers left the dead..

In the opening Reaver assault of that village, we see Reavers throwing away the corpse of that poor guy who Mat killed to avoid him being victim of Reavers.. they lost interest in him as soon as he was dead.. they surelly ignored Wash remains

Yes. Also, the crew probably would have noticed his body missing after the battle. I'd say he was buried on that stony bluff in the final scenes of Serenity.

Well, there are a lot of "I think they would've"-points, but it's all speculations, and I can't really see anything that makes my idea impossible, even though it's far out. Besides, I don't see any of you sclemiels coming up with anything (other than the flashbacks)

From the movie remake thread. How would you recast Serenity/Firefly with an A-list cast?

Mal - Clive Owen
Wash - Zach Braff
Zoe - Halle Berry
Jayne - The Rock
Kaylee - Hillary Duff
Inara - Scarlet Johansen
River - Milla Jovovich
Book - Morgan Freeman
Simon - Adam Brody

Some i'm not too sure about, Hillary Duff is the only youngish actress i can think off that hasn't become a drug addicted crack whore. Zach Braff doesn't have red hair, and Milla is a little too old but at least it's certain we see some boobs. It's just not a Jovovich movie without some nudity.

I simply wouldn't. Anymore than I would consider replacing my own mother with a similar-looking-yet-significantly-more-expensive woman.

okay, i'll rephrase the question, if a Uber Hollywood studio was going to recast serenity with A-list actors, who do you think they would use?

A dirty cop?
I'd kind of figured him for an operative, same as the British gent featured so prominently in Serenity, who had done horrific things, and like the operative at the end of Serenity come to realize the wrongness and futility of those actions.

Or perhaps Book *is* the operative from Serenity, travelled back in time to....
...nah, that's stupid.

Bumped 'cause I done this, which I think is pretty neat:

Mal: "Well, look at this! Appears we got here just in the nick of time. Whaddya suppose that makes us, pointy ears?"

Spock: "If memory serves, the phrase you have a predilection for repeating is 'big damn heroes', Captain."

Mal: "Ain't we just!"

McCoy: "I'm a Doctor, not a big damn hero."

I'm  guessing "nudity" isn't a problem with any of her contracts. But yeah that's exactly what I thought when I saw that. This role is so similar to hers in Firefly - she's kinda psychic to everything around her, kicks ass as a fighter, and of course, the nudity haha. The only thing different is she's not completely off the deep end like in Firefly - but I don't know, I only saw bits and pieces of it last night. That promo pic they have of her doesn't look like her to me, which is why I didn't even know she was in this until watching it during channel flips.

I dunno, I think I'll continue to think of her as just a powerful little girl like on Firefly.

They should have included that in the film as it was away from prudish US TV restrictions  ;)

Best fanfic I've read all day.

Also the only fanfic I've read all day.

I have a few problems with it, but they're inevitable I suppose. All in all, a good thing.

OK, I'm eons late to this, but I finally watched the whole series followed by the movie. And... wow.  Best... show... ever?  There's so much awesome stuff I could ramble on about, but everyone except me apparently has already known.  Glad I finally decided to see it.  Seriously angered that it only got 14 episodes.

To quote coldangel:

Firefly. If not the greatest sci-fi show ever, then beyond a doubt the most human. Every one of those characters represented a facet of humanity an a manner most vibrant, worldly, and true. They're the kind of magnificently flawed and fucked-up characters that live on in legend.

When I was home sick a couple of weeks back I decided to buy the first episode on XBLA. by the time I recovered I had bought all 14 episodes. Much better than a lot of shit that somehow avoids cancellation.

I must say it is clearly strongly influenced by a variety of Anime and Star Wars, but to dismiss it as a rip-off is a bit much. I agree with both coldangels that part of what made great was the realness of the characters and richness of their relationships; given it's short run, this is an acheivement.

The visual style was also very polished (by comparison, the first few seasons of Trek were all over the place). I, for one, would've preferred complete silence to the folky guitar tracks overlaid with many of the space shots of the ship; I felt like they were just slapping you in the face with the "space western" thing at that point.

Anyway, yeah, overall good show.

I still don't quite see where the anime enters, other than the "hands of blue" guys. All the other anime tie-ins people have pointed out have real-world counterparts in times of old.

But yeah, welcome aboard, Berges and Goph...
