Excuse me for a minute while I vent my vexation with What the fuck? Where the hell did they come up with that as the fearsome, tree-rocking, pilot-stomping security system? Please. They had better have a damn good explanation for that. Okay, ranting aside, I liked this episode. It certainly explained a lot about Eko, and it was neat how they drew parallels between him and Charley.
I wonder if Eko will start thinking more like Locke now that a huge, yellow coincidence seems to have found him on the island of mystery.
Also, bonus points to Eko for the double throat slash combo.

Did I see things wrong? Who kicked who out of the plane? Who was wearing the cross round his neck? I thought Eko got on the plane and the priest brother remained?

You know, if I had just suddenly turned on the tv and saw some show with a black cloud in the jungle, I would think it was cheesey. But because it's Lost, I'll make an exception. What is the black smoke supposed to be anyway? Is it like majic or is it supposed to be some kind of really high-tech bomb?

Eko was the one who got voted off the plane in "Survivor: Nigerian Drug Runners". His brother, Yemi, was the dead priest in the plane wearing the cross. The dead priest in the jungle was Eko's henchman who betrayed him.

I can see that, because of it's metallic sounds and the electricity eminating within it. Also that would explain why there are no footprints of the monster around the island.
More and more, it's looking like my theory of "the island as a genetic research laboratory" is looking good. Your theory? Good episode, after all we finally got to see the monster, I also dig this nanobot theory, but it reminded me of "The Abyss", when this strange water thing enters the station and makes contact with the crew. Why is Charlie stashing these Virgin Mary figures? Also, "Prey" was a bit of a disappointment when I read it, but now I know that reading was useful after all...

Wow. Free Drugs Island. A dream come true. Also, did I see the outlines of a person in the smoke monster, just for a split second?

However, I can tell you that I haven't seen the outline of a person in the smoke monster. It went around Mr. Eko for a second, but that's it. I wonder if Locke had the same experience with the monster at the beginning of the first season...

"What are you gonna do, beat me with your Jesus stick?" Heehee... That was a pretty damned good episode. It is now blatantly obvious that the thing is not a dinosaur/monster of some sort, but smoke? (DrThunder88) They had better have a damn good explanation for that. Seriousely. This is headed into a sci-fi otherwise, which is not good (for this show).

Well, I agree with the nanobot theory for the monster. It seems most logical, especially since I myself don't believe in spirits. But, the writers could throw us a curveball and make it spirits. But I really hope that doesn't happen.
As for the genetic research theory, that also seems most logical. I mean, there was the scientist in the video. Plus, putting in the numbers every 180 minutes*** seems like a psychological test, and Jack eventually typed the numbers.**** And there was also that one time when Locke barely inputed the numbers before time ran out. AND, there's also the thing with Michael dealing with Walt's disappearance.
Also, my teacher suggested that the island was a purgatory place, which I think is also a good theory. But doesn't everyone on the island has something bad/horrible/sinful in their lives? If so, then there's a slight flaw there. But now that I think of it, purgatory might not be the reason for the island, but one of many, many factors. (Which is what I believe she said in the first place, but now I don't remember.)
lolz, because my teacher likes 'Lost' (and because of the January 11, 2006 United States airing), I've decided to buy the Season 1 DVD.
Anyway, if I remember and feel like it, I will type something better than what I just did.
***=Is it 180 minutes, or something else? ****=Was it Jack who eventually typed the numbers? I think it was Locke who did, but I'm not sure.

Also, did I see the outlines of a person in the smoke monster, just for a split second? I finally watched this episode. And yes, in the shot where the smoke is stopped in front of Ecko, then the camera pans out, you can see a greyish colored "something" retreating from the smoke. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a person, but it was def. something, as confirmed with freezeframe re-watching. (God bless Tivo!)
Is it just me, or did the henchman kick Ecko out of the plane for no reason? Oh I'm sorry, Lost Writers, it must have been FATE! PS what are the odds of BOTH planes crashing on the same island? Sometimes this show pisses me off so much, but I can't help loving it anyway. It's an abusive relationship.

I love how everything connects together and all. Like how everyone has something in their past that connects with someone else, but I don't think I'm seeing how Eko ties into it all. I guess we'll find out though because it didn't show how he got to the island. I'm still not sure what I think of the black smoke. I really don't think I saw a human figure in it or even a gray figure but I might not have been watching closely. I also like the nano bot theory but once again, I'm not sure. And if Locke did see the black smoke at the beginning of season 1, why didn't he tell anyone? He's a little out there and all but wouldn't he still tell Jack or someone?

Remember what Jack's dad said in "Outlaws" regarding why they call Australia "down under." It's as close as you can get to hell without being burned. So maybe Australia is purgatory and maybe the island is some pre-purgatory destination...'bingatory' or something.
When you think about it, all of the survivors endured some sort of hardship in Australia and most of them did something bad in their home country that led them there. But that's all metaphorical mumbo and jumbo. It's still most likely that the island is a laboratory for genetic and psychological experiments that happened to be built on a secret military installation that once was an ancient polynesian burial ground. Also, it's the smoke monster's summer home.

But you see it before the explosion. I checked frame by frame, you see it more than once in the seconds following that bit, swooping in a few times from angles that couldn't be debris. It could very well have brought the plane down too. Good find Davey.
