Maybe Season 1 just wasn't as funny because it was made back in 1989 and they were trying to attract audiences back in that year ande know the jokes relate to us and are different?

I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I'm inclinded to agree with dothebartman on this one. Season 1 is funny, but maybe just not as fast. He's right though, some of the episodes are played mainly for laughs. I think they are still funny today because a lot of the humour is character based, which means it can always be related to by people, no matter how many years and generations pass...

I had just turned 5 the month Season One debuted so I don't remember watching it, nor do I remember what comedy was like in 1989. Perhaps shows were slower back then. Seasons 1 and 2 of Married with Children aren't really all that funny to me. They were probably really histerical back then. But I guess thing are different now. People need snappy come backs and what have you. The Simpsons season 1 was a thinking mans show.

Every one has to admit that the first seson would be so much better if ONLY IT HAD BETTER ANIMATION!!!

No, it'd be better if it was funnier. I have no problem with Season 1's animation. If anything, it's somewhat charming...

I actually have a problem watching the animation for the modern Simpsons. It just seems too colourful and bright for me, and I loved the animation in the first few seasons.

Agreed, I like the Simpsons animation from seasons 3-9.

Like M0le said, it's too bright and colorful now. They should just try and concentrate on making it funny, not looking good, (or what they think is good.)

I like the new animation... but then again, I'm a perfectionist who likes everything looking as good as possible. I want the outlines in cartoons to be sharp, damnit!

I like the most recent animation a lot.  Expressive, sharp, good direction and "acting", etc.

What I don't like so much is the animation around seasons 10-13.  Its very flat, often sort of strange looking actually, with very bland sitcommish direction most of the time.  I'd go out on a limb and say season 8 might've started that trend, though it wasn't a huge problem until 10.  Around 14 I think we started to get good visuals again.

The writing and animation departments are different, the animation has nothing to do with the quality of the writing.

I'd agree with DTB I think by 8 Wes Archer had left and David Silverman by 9, and I think after that lot of the staging got bland and the expressions limited (Of course this has much to do with the writing) silverman was at least back as storyboard consultant by 14 and is now supervising director.

But even so I think its still a little bland looking when looking at something like Rosebud, I guess a lot of directors just have to get the job done and don't think so creativley.

Also note there's a difference between animation and coloring, the animation is still made in the same way but the coloring is digital and the problem with the coloring is that the backgrounds look a little flat and sterile.

I will say this for post season 14 Simpsons: the animation and direction have got a lot better be comparison with the previous few seasons. It's not as pretty as Futrama could be, but it's getting there.

Alas, they're never going to bring back that cool mono-colour effect from the earliest seasons, are they?

My favourite season is whichever has 'This Little Wiggy'. Tell me which that is and I'll vote...

Season 9.

EDIT: Just to clarify, that's the answer to GreyThinkyWhale's question, not what I'm voting for.

Unfortunatly, I come from a generation that grew up with The Simpsons. Therefore, it is an institution and it is impossible for me to have an opinion.

Yeah.  Star Wars existed before I was born.  Doesn't mean I can't still say that The Empire Strikes Back is the best one and that The Phantom Menace sucks balls.

I mean that all seasons from 4-10 have blended into one which was 3 years behind Sky.

Even though I haven't seen anything from the 5th for, say, 7 years (planning on seeing the DVD soon), it's getting my vote. Because the Simpsons I remember mainly includes eps from that season. Ah, the nostalgia  :D
