normal movies cant even live up to the quality of the above movies.
Anime is great, you just need to filter out the crap like you do with music and normal tv. I dont know why everyone just "hates anime!"

I don't think people hate anime, just that a certain person seemed to mention it in every post when he first came here, that got very annoying very fast. I think I saw Akira on TV ages ago before I'd even heard the term anime, it was pretty cool, if weird.

I have seen both Akira and Princess Mononoke. They were both crap. A "forest spirit"? Holy pigs and wolves? It doesn't make any sense. For some reason it's reminding me of crazy hippies... [Hippie]Look at the colors! These will go great with my soul![/Hippie] Stupid superstitious Japanese cartoonists! Give me some good ol' American scifi!

It does nothing classic mythology doesn't do. Do you think the Minotaur is a stupid idea? What about cowardly lions and witches with red shoes? I bet you don't dig on the flying in kung-fu movies either. Japanese and Chinese movie-making has, naturally, evolved in a different way to european and US cinema, giving it it's own conventions. Those of you with the more closed minds should go back and reappraise it after western moviemakers have finished raping it senseless and bastardizing it's ideas, and then you'll understand. Either that or you'll still diss it for being 'cheap-looking' and having 'weird' storylines. ignorant fools.

Yeah, so far as I can tell, lots of people's problems with anime comes from their lack of appreciation of Japanese culture and themes. I mean, in Japan cartoons are a respected media just like any other, instead of being only for comedy as it is in the US. If you got over the idea that it's a cartoon taken seriously, not just for jokes, and realized how many "weird" things are related to Japanese culture and mythology, you might appreciate it more. Basically, I'm telling some of you to grow up and quit being so westernized.
Obviously not everyone's going to like anime, and that's fine. But disliking it just because it's not a direct product of your culture and you're ignorant regarding its source, is pretty dumb in my humble opinion.
Like if an African tribesman called science fiction stupid after watching 6 minutes of Star Wars Episode One.

This is what I was talking about when I started the thread Otis, Nobody really hates any particular form of entertainment, just the people who go nuts over it. Anime is actually watchable, having seen a little more of it in the past few days I can see how people actually do find themselves sitting down in front of the TV to immerse them selves in the product of another culture for a few minutes. Part of what I am saying is that you should be a little more broadminded, part of what I am saying is that just because certain fanatical viewpoints have been imposed upon you doesn't mean that you have to look upon all Eastern and Oriental TV as pure drivel. I mean, East is East was a foriegn culture film, and I liked it. Live and let live. I think that maybe we all ought to be a little more tolerant of other cultures. This by no means is an excuse for the Lunatic Fringe (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) to ram Anime and other things down our throats. Having said that, I still think that quite a lot of Anime doesn't make much sense from a purely Western point of view, and you have to try and understand some of the more esotric references through research. I can safely say that I will not be watching any more Anime or researching into it for a couple of months! The last paragraph written with Tongue firmly placed into my Cheek

Hate to reopen this argument but some dude pointed me in this direction so blame him and not me. I have seen a few anime it's not like I'm dissing it without seeing anything. I have seen Sailor moon the American dubbed version and the original undubbed Japanese movie version, I have seen pokemon, digimon, dragon ball Z, Princess Monenoke, Totoro, kiki's delivery service, and a handful of anime that's been on Cartoon Central and I have found all of it to be crap. Visually as well as plot wise. Kiki was ok, the plot was actually cute but on a visual standpoint it still made me want to gouge my eyes out and after sitting through an hour of princess monenoke i wanted to throw myself through a plate glass window. (The only reason i saw it in the theater was because Gillian Anderson was the voice of that wolf/god thing) And although I was entertained by her...and those little white things that spun their heads around (i want one!)i was bored almost to tears with every other aspect of it and its not something I would ever see again. So Japan came up with it to help themselves out of an economic decline, I can understand that and sympathize, but did they have to make it so icky looking? The characters, especially the girls are way to disproportionate. The heads are to big the breasts are to big the waists are to narrow, the legs are too long. if they were actual people I doubt they'd be able to walk upright and the way they make expressions is scary. They get nervous and suddenly a lime sized sweat drop is balanced on their heads? What the heck? In Sailor moon and DBZ the characters strike weird poses at unusual moments, in kiki people started laughing spontaneously for no reason, not normal laughing but head back stomach shaking full out guffaws...over nothing. It greatly confuses me because obviously i'm missing some great cosmic joke. In short I just want someone to explain the great attraction because I have looked and I cannot find it at all. And what i also want to know is why do most Anime fans get so bent out of shape and insulted when someone disses anime? They throw little hissyfits which dosn't help their case any. Back when i ate drank and peed X-Files whenever someone told me they thought it sucked my answer was always something along the lines of "And this concerns me....how?" Unlike a lot of people i can accept that not everyone likes what i like and i could really care less about it. There. Now my rant is complete! Tada! The end! Move along there's no more to see here.....::waves::

That wasn't really a rant; it was a reasoned argument about why you personally don't like the genre. I can't see anybody taking offence; different people like different things, you just explained why you personally don't like anime.

Don't go pointing fingers, I just thought that a lively debate might entertain us all, and that Venus may even change her mind. If someone has a good reason for liking anime, then now would be a good time to share it with all. Although, as far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't miss it if it died, but don't mind it and find some of it entertaining. This does not mean that I find it erotic, like some of you anime/hentai nuts out there. So come on guys, if you too are partial to the occasional oddball goofy anime that's totally off the wall and swarming with magic robots, tell poor 'ol Venus why. All you anime nuts, word your posts carefully, or you could put her off anime even further. All you who agree with Venus, add an amusing smiley to the end of your post to prove that you have a sense of humour and tolerance Open the floodgates! Edit: Oh, and Nurdy, Otis, please refrain from an all out war this time !

Explain to me how Hanna-Barbara cartoons are any worse than anime. Without using "I don't like the animation" or "the plots are lame."
