I have to question whether this is "The Venture Brothers" anymore so much as it is "A bizarre universe of characters who all know the Venture brothers".
It really hasn't been focussed on the Venture Brothers for a while now. They even acknowledged it in the season 1-4 recap video that surfaced before S5 started.

I guess a title's just a title, though. Either way, I think the show keeps getting better and better each season.

The story writing is just really tight and always has been.  It's edge of your seat entertainment, and the twists they come up with and connections made have always been believable and well done.

I honestly don't think that it's quite as gut-bustingly funny as it was in its glory days of the first two seasons, but I would agree that it's improved in other ways such as the complexity of the running narratives, and definitely the animation.

Wasn't Hatred supposed to have his tits removed in the last episode? I guess they didn't get round to it.

Dr. Venture apparently died in this week's episode. Pretty sure he's going to come back, though I wonder whether it'll happen in the finale, or we'll have to wait a year and half until Season 6 to have him return.

Vendata is the Monarch's dad.  Calling it now.  Also, I don't think Rusty is dead, as I remember a brief clip in the Season 5 sneak peek that showed Rusty being threatened by the Monarch all bandaged up in a scene we haven't seen yet.

Rusty is not dead, he appears next week.

Vendata is the Monarchs dad.. and appears to be (dead again), at the hands of a savage Brock beating.

The Revenge Society is going to be back next season.

Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is now one of the council of thirteen.

THAT EPISODE WENT V DEEP!

Enjoyed the season but was a little underwhelmed by the finale. It seemed to try to cover too much ground in such a short amount of time

Are there only 8 episodes in total this season, or is this a "long season being split in two" deal like season 4 was?

No, that 8 episode run was the complete entity of Season 5 (9 episodes if you count the Halloween special, and 10 if you count the hour long premiere as 2 episodes). The next episodes to air are purely Season 6 episodes, which will not air for another 1.5 years.

Hmm... Bit disappointing given how long the wait was (speaking in terms of how many episodes there were, of course, not the actual quality of them).

Ha, loved Doc's pee idea. Disappointed we didn't get a sizzler of Season 6 clips like the other Season trailers, but it's still funny to hear from Doc and Jackson again (I'm guessing there's something about Venture Jr.'s spacestation in the true Season 5 finale, along with something about Rusty being a villain).

The Venture Bros. panel from the latest Dragoncon with Doc Hammer:

Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnHIzYWq7Hg
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeI3npFOkr8

Doc makes it sound like the super special may just air in 2015 (or whenever) as the season 6 opener.
He says even he doesn't know for sure, so it could still air in November or December 2014 like Adult Swim originally stated months ago.. but maybe not.
Either way, Doc says Jackson is hard at work on it while he goofs off on the panel and makes people laugh, all the while talking about his favorite taboo.. masturbation.
Also... "sandwiches" becomes a hot new metaphor... or does it?

Thanks for posting but I can't be bothered watching it because I'm lazy. Do they confirm if it's actually an hour-long episode or just a normal half-hour jobby? The press-release a while back referred to it as both.

It's an hour long.  ;)

It might end up being the season six opener now and will air in 2015 probably.

Yup, the hour-long special is locked in for January 19th.

----

The hour-long special set in space will premiere on January 19th, 2015 at midnight ET/PT.

THE VENTURE BROS. SUPER SPECIAL – Space. The final frontier, where no one can hear you scream, revenge is only served cold, and the drinks are comped in the casino. Join the Ventures–and pretty much everyone they’ve ever crossed paths with–as they rocket to the Gargantua-2 space station for an epic, hour-long adventure that will change the Ventureverse as we know it forever.

I liked the season, but having the longest wait for the shortest season was annoying, and I thought the finale was pretty underwhelming, considering the previous three were two parters

I agree that the finale was fairly underwhelming, but only because it was basically a big "to be continued, come back next season" jobby.

Still, I loved season 5 overall and I don't mind waiting if it means that the guys making it can keep the quality up. I'd rather get a small season of quality episodes than another season 3 and given that Jackson and whatshisface pretty much do everything on the show themselves, I can forgive how long it takes them to produce each season.

I think season 3 leaned a little too heavily on flashbacks and "origin stories" but it was where I felt the show's universe really became something I could invest in as a viewer, rather than just something to be amused by.

Season 2 was the show's best season in my eyes. Absolute perfection.

Nothing in season 3 was actively bad, but none of it was particularly great, either. It just meandered along, going with the notions. I think I'd give every single episode in season 3 a 7/10... it's just very bland.

Season 4 was really hit and miss but at least it had those hits. I love a lot of season 4. Season 5 was really short, but I loved almost all of it. "What Color Is Your Cleansuit?" in particular was just excellent.

"The Buddy System", "Now Museum--Now You Don't!", and the two-part finale are all standout, top-tier Venture Bros. episodes.
