Just a few questions about the DOOP army. First off, if it's a UN-style organization, why do they need an army of such massive size?
Second, if its the "Democratic Order Of *Planets*, why does it consist mostly of humans? It also seems that it protects Earth more than anything else (WITHW, ATOF, WAA).
Third, how did Zapp reach his rank? I know that he reached noteriety(sp) via his strategy of "send wave after wave of soldier", but how did he get to the rank to command in the first place? Does he have friends in high places, or was it just dumb luck?

EDIT: I wasn't sure if this should go in HR or Weird Scenes. If I got it wrong, please move it.

It doesn't.  Watch the beginning of "Branagan Begin Again".  There's lots of different aliens.  The president is from Kif's planet.

Anyway, try reading this thread.  It might answer some of your other questions.

think of it this way; In Harry Potter 2, Gildory Lockhart was like Zap. A big famous guy that everyone though was great, but was actually a foney. Gildory never even did any of the things that people thought he did. He cursed a memory charm on the real heros to make himself famous. But at least Zap has done somethings that weren't stolen from someone else. He's not that bad. Just a sex pervert but not that bad. My case rest.

Zapp blew up DOOP headquarters and the hubble telescope, crashed a resteraunt and was single-handedly responsible for putting everyone's lives in danger on Amazonia, again almost got everyone killed when he became captain of Planet Express, and helped Earth be overtaken by Zoidberg's race, but he's not a bad captain?

Zapp could come from a high-up family, and was sent to officer training college. He graduated with distinction because of his extensive knowledge of middle-age battle tactics (line up and charge). The DOOP officials decided that they needed a new angle on space battle, as every alien race knew their tactics, so they decided to enlist Zap as a captain to try out tactics so old that no aliens would be able to figure out a useful counter-tactic. A few battles and countless waves of soldiers later, Zapp is a 25-star general, as he has gotten results.

In the future, everyone gets career chips, that tell them what job they're genetically predisposed to be best at.

Zapp's been told since forever that he was a great military leader, and it's gone to his head - doesn't _do_ anything, knows it's in his genes.

Lack of work/thought/effort combined with automatic promotions (based on his genetic potential) combined with folk telling him how great he is have together produced the feckless idiot with a spanking fetish we know and... that we know.

And the DOOP needs a big army so it can actually funtion properly. Look at UN and it's non-funtioning glory. Sure it makes statements and "imposes" ideas, but in the end, it really doesn't do much.

it needs a big army coz zapp keeps sending wave after wave of men to there death, so they need backup for his crew and such. one thing i was wondering though, is it really the army? i know they fight on the ground, but they also fly and the air force has ground troops as well. however, it could also be the navy, coz as far as i know, which is a fair bit i can tell you, the air force cant transport 1000's of personnal and the navy can, also they refer to the transport as "ships". oh well, trivial i guess but still...

The DOOP was also likened to the United Federation of Planets in "Star Trek", by a bureaucrat nonetheless and we all know how anal and by-the-book those guys are. The UFP have a massive military, Star Fleet, since it foreign-, defense- and trade-policies as well as diplomacy fall under it's jurisdiction. DOOP most likely have a similar role, but still grant it's members some autonomy in minor issues.

Zap gained his position become the military in 3000 is just as incompetant as it was in 2000. The reason we seen almost entirely humans making up DOOP forces is because each planet contributes contingents from it's own populations stationed upon their home planets. If Amphibios 4 was invaded the defence would be done mainly by Amphibiosians. However as it's almost always Earth under threat it's the human Earthican contigents of the DOOP's forces.

Zapp likes him, and since he is a 25-stargeneral webelose-somthing-or-another, he get his wish.

I think one the reasons why we only see Earth-invasions is that Earth is the only planet foolish enoug to provoke galactic powers stronger than itself. I mean, they should just put out for an invasion-supscription with the Omicronians, much cheaper and easier to plan for.
