There's a robot with the appearance of having a high collar that stands next to Bender in the crowd in Mother's Day and features on All My Circuits in Bender Should Not Be Allowed on TV. Indeed he seems to be used whenever the animators need a spare robot. Is he ever named? Is he a single robot or a make of robot? Does anyone care?

You mean the one on the left?  I think it's just used when they need a random robot or a crowd-filler.  They tend to recycle the same characters.  Note that in this one shot alone you can see Boxy, Preacherbot, one of the Robot House robots (I forgot his name), a primitive robot, and even a Killbot.

And the deacon from the church of Robotology.

Whenever you see those big robot-crowds it usually means they use every single robot in the model-pack, so naturally you'd seen them before.

There's also a giant statue of that robot in the museum in 'Mothers Day' as well.
Another robot I'd like to point out is the vaguely Chinese-looking robot with the hat that is in a huge number of episodes for crowd scenes.

Okay, how about this:

The robot may look like filler, but in fact he's working for a secret government agency.

Had Futurama carried on for a 5th or even 6th season, we'd have discovered that he's part of a highly convoluted plot devised by this agency and the Nibblonians to bring Fry and Leela together in preperation for the coming Invasion.
