I gotta say, while this particular thread seems pretty pointlessly bumped, the widespread terror of starting a thread that already exists makes it a real dilemma as to what one should or shouldn't resurrect.

In the first season, it seemed to be "Unit 22" and as the series progessed, it was revealed to be "Rodriguez".  I think his last name is Rodriguez.

Another tidbit about Bender's first name: Not only does it mean 'Drinking spree', as well as 'Person or thing that bends', but is also supposedly a reference to the rebel character John Bender in the film 'The Breakfast Club'.

Off-topic: Incidentally, Dean Vernon in 'Mars University' was probably named after Richard Vernon, the principal and detention supervisor in the aforementioned film.

Dean Vernon is....

From _Animal House_ (Dean Vernon Wormer, played by John Vernon) rather than from _The Breakfast Club_ (Principal Richard Vernon, played by Paul Gleason).

At least, that's what I understand from the commentaries.  And if that doesn't convince you, consider that much of the episode is a rip-off (sorry, homage) of _Animal House_ (as well as _Revenge of the Nerds_.  Also a little bit of that Charlie Brown summer camp boat race.  But I digress....)

However, as I think the commentaries also say, the creators were indeed inspired by the BC character John Bender (Judd Nelson) for Bender's name -- and a bit of his personality.  Judd Nelson preserved in animation -- who'd have thunk it?
