How tall do you think the characters are?

Here's what I think:

Fry: 6'0
Leela: 5'11 - 6'0
Amy: 5'8
Zapp: 6'4 -6'5
Bender w/ intenna: 6'1-6'1
Hermes: 5'9
Farnsworth:
Zoidburg:

What do you all think?

Oh and if Futurama were made into a real life movie, who do you think would play each character?

They don't seem that short to me.  The professor is much shorter and I doubt he's 5'3-5'4.

i mean, without his intenna (sp?) he'd be shorter.  like if you count the top of his head...kinda like how people spike their hair to make them seem taller...anyway.

"Antenna" is the correct spelling.   :D

The part that confused me was that you gave Bender's height as a range from 6'1" to 6'1".  That's the same numbers twice.

The heights you've given make everyone taller than average height.  They don't seem that tall to me.

oops just a typo I guess.  Meant to put 6'1-6'2

Average height?  I thought those were average?  Maybe I just know a lot of tall people.  How tall do you think the characters are?

I dunno, but there's no way that Amy is 5'8".  I've never met a Chinese girl who was that tall.

Fry is roughly the same height as bender, not counting the antennae. Leela looks like she's the same height as Fry, but don't forget she wears platform boots. And Amy is a full head shorter than Leela. and that's all i got, so make of it what you will.

True, guess I'll have to look again about Amy.  Maybe the time I actually took notice to her was when she was wearing heels or something. *shrugs*

If you take a look at "The Cyber House Rules" (3ACV09 I think), Bender shows the kids a photo of him having his mugshots taken after stealing a watch.  In that picture, his antenna is just past the 6ft mark, and the top of Fry's hair reaches taller than that. Fry's gotta be about 6'2" and Leela's not much less (assuming she's got her boots on).

We know from Bender's mugshot in  "The Cyber House Rules" that he's slightly above 6'0 with antenna.

According to the character sheets included on the season 3 DVD's Fry is 4 heads tall and Leela is 4½ heads tall, so Leela would still be slightly taller than Fry, even without her boots.

My take:

Bender: 6'1
Fry: 6'0 (he looks like average height)
Leela: 6'3
Amy: 5'5
Zoidberg: 5'5-5'6
Zapp: 6'3+ (looks taller than Leela)
Kif: 5'5 (about the same as Amy)

And that's all I got for now, most are taken from this thread though.

Heh, we had that live action actors discussion before. We al agreed it should never be done, but just for the sake of argument (or fun) we still made our lists. Here's my take:

Fry: Nicholas Brendon, sounds fine to me.

Leela: Kristen Johnston, Angeline Jolie (although I wouldn't object strongly against Jeri Ryan)   ;)

Bender: Some actor in a robot costume, and then let John Di Maggio do the voice.

Amy: Linda Park, Michelle Krusiec

Farnsworth: Mel Brooks

Zoidberg: Some actor in a Zoidy costume, and then let Billy West do the voice.

Hermes: Stuff some pillows under Doug E. Doug's shirt and you're set.

Zapp Brannigan: William Shatner

Cubert: I dunno, perhaps Will Wheaton's little brother.    :evillaugh:

Kif: David Spade.

From this thread.

Welcome to PEEL, BendingUnit22. Enjoy it here.

Yeah, second. Good actor choices, but it just wouldn't be the same without the voices we know and love.  They'd have to be dubbed in after.

leela doesnt seem to be taller than fry at all, when they are face to face, or walking side by side they appear roughly the same height. though i do believe leela is probably an inch or 2 shorter, with the boots on. ive often compaired the two in scenes in terms of height, and its always seemed to me leela is a little bit shorter. her hair might be a little taller, but judging by the eye level, and forehead regions on them both, fry has the upper hand.
such as in this image...if it comes out, not really sure what im doing with the coding.

anyways...
Zoidberg would be played by Rodney Dangerfield

Leela is taller than Fry. People just think that he's taller because he is the 'everyman' hero of the series (Look at almost any film,  all the leading men are taller then the actresses(unless it is Danny DeVito(Woooo! Danny DeVito!))).

Here is a grab from "A Flight To Remember" which someone mentioned earlier. I think it is supposed to create the impression that the ship is massive, but to me they just all look incredibly short, especially Amy and Farnsworth!

Thank you, Ozor Mox.

It doesn't look like Leela is taller than Fry to me.  They appear to be about the same height, and this is with her boots on.

Also, look at how much taller LaBarbara is than Fry and Leela.  If Leela is 6'3" (!) then LaBarbara must be well over six and a half feet tall.

Ah, but you can always find framegrabs that support your viewpoint:

Leela defientely taller than Fry.

Taller, in barefoot.

Anyway, the charactersheets have her half a head taller than Fry, and since they're as canon as can be....  ;)

Well it is the future and each generation keeps getting taller. It would not surprise me if most of the Characters where around 6 foot tall.
Incidently what about Bender's mug shot in "The Cyberhouse rules" I seem to remember that it placed him over 6 feet, then again it might be a perspective thing.

There are character sheets on the S3 DVDs?  Woof,  I really need to go through my DVDs and make sure I find all the extras.  I wish they'd put this kind of information in a book.  Maybe something similar to the Simpsons drawing book that's out there.  This will probably never happen of course.

So then, you admit that who is taller than whom varies from scene to scene, making the whole question of heights rather subjective?  Good.  I'm glad to see that you and I are on the same page here.

The fact that Fry is four heads tall, and that Leela is four and a half heads tall, doesn't necessarily mean that Leela is taller than Fry is.  It just means that Fry has a bigger head than Leela does, proportionally speaking.

I would assume the character sheets are using a certain characters head as a metric, Fry perhaps.  This would fix the heights.  It seems there wouldn't be much need for the character sheets if everything was subjective.

I haven't seen the character sheets, but in general, when a cartoon character is said to be a certain number of heads tall, that character's own head is the head in question.  It's a proportional thing, and it has nothing to do with that character's height relative to other characters.

Maybe so, but it doesn't seem logical to me that the character sheet would specify character proportion and leave relative character height subjective.  Since the characters are on screen with each other it would be very confusing to the viewer if they are varying with height in each scene.  I think the character sheets would at least set a relative height for the characters to each other.  I guess I'll have to take a look at the sheets on the season 3 DVDs that I didn't know I had!

It's on disc 4 "How to draw"- Fry/Leela.

And yes, it's their respective head that's used as reference. Fry's head for Fry and vice versa.

Another tid-bit from the DVD's: Fry's head is 4 eye-balls (Fry's) tall, while Leela's head is just above 4 eye-balls (Leela's) tall.

So, the character-description call for Leela to be ~19 eyeballs tall and Fry to be 16 eyeballs tall. Now, lets fight over who has the heighest eyeball.     :D They seem of equal height to me, even though Leela's is wider.

I think Leela's is definitely taller. It's roughly the same size at the edges, but because of the oval shape it gets taller than Fry's in the middle.

On a slightly related note, Leela's brain must be somewhere other than her head, surely? Because she can move her eyeball in the same way as the rest of us, her eyeball must be spherical, which would make it massive, and leave little to no room for her brain.

So either it's somewhere else, or Mutants use their brain more efficiently than unmodded humans.   :p

And on another slightly related note; has anyone else noticed that Fry is the only Futurama character with "Simpsons" style eyes? Zoidberg has a slightly wider nose bridge, the Professor and Hermes have glasses and Amy has the slightly smaller eyes which represent Asians in Groening's style. In general actually, Futurama's secondary characters have much wider nose bridges than Simpsons ones - probably due to the better animation technique of the show.
