No, I think he was made that way to be funnier. At least there's no reference to his poor-/friendslessness until the mid first season or something like that. I don't have the exact episode that was revealed though.

In "A Flight to Remember," Zoidberg gets to stay in a diamond-encrusted lobster tank, and doesn't end up on the Fiesta Deck with Fry, Leela, and Bender.  I don't think they had decided to make him pathetic at that point.

I loved the fact that they let him join in the comentary on Birdbot of Icecatraz.  He was so funny.

A lot of great Zoidbergisms in "The honking"; "I have mail order courses in murderology and murderonomy" also hermes-"whats that your hacking off? is it my torso?" zoidberg- "Hermes, quiet, im deducing" (although that may not be strictly accurate a think it captures the spirit).

The best Zoidberg moment is in Bender Gets Made, when Leela tears off the roof of the Planet Express building and Hermes turns to Zoidberg and says "That's coming out of your paycheck." Then Zoidberg just starts sobbing. Classic.

Isnt that AOI 1 not the honking? Anyway it is still a great line!   

Personally my favourite Zoidy line is his end piece about Valentines day on Love And Rocket. "It was? Hooray!"

I like Zoidberg because of poor down beat attitude on life also his one liners are sheer class    bravo! zoidberg although zoidberg is apparantly the funniest my on personal thought on who is the funniest has to be The Velour Fog Mr Zapp Braniggan

How funny does he look in 'Bend Her' when everyone's throwing scraps at him and he's trying to eat them. Awwww..   
His little pet routine in 'The Day the World Stood Stupid' was another great Zoidberg moment.
