Maybe they accepted her as a alien that mutated from humans.
Take the Amazons for example, they are technically human but more likely aliens as they come from a different planet and look much taller and stronger than "normal earthican" females.
They are known on earth, as they are part of Doop.

Isn't possible that there are all kinds of human-like aliens in the Futurama universe? They probably thought that Leela is one of a unknown species out of space.

The question remains as to why ANY mutant couldn't just claim to be from some undiscovered planet.
