Why is Amy Wong so clumsy and awkward?  Was it because she was fat as a kid in Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles?

In one of the DVD commentaries, they say that klutzy cartoon characters are usually male, like Homer Simpson, so they wanted to try a klutzy female character.  That's the real reason, anyway.  I guess they also wanted to offset her attractiveness and wealth with some negative qualities.  But we really don't see it very often.

It came up a lot in I Roommate though, and in Fry and The Slurm Factory, but I guess after that it became more that she was cute and less that she was clumsy.

And in The Series Has Landed, but yes that character trait appears to have disappeared quite a bit since the first season.

I like the bit with her hover board, in "Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch".

Amy can fly around on her board without crashing or falling off, but once she lands, she falls down getting off of the board.

She has a bit of trouble decorating the tree in "X-Mas Story". In "The Cyber House Rules", she also drops her wine glass when Fry refers to her as "a klutz from Mars". It must've been like that magic teacup that Fry's girlfriend Michelle drops though 'coz it's completely intact and full in the next shot of her.  big grin

That bit is great. Fry is talking really seriously, then you see Amy fly past in the background and crash. Totally unexpected the first time I watched that episode!

AMY IS THE BEST!!!

i love this characer!!! and i think that leela pales in comparison to her.

hot, asian, rich, and willing to have a loving sex filled relationship with fry. seriously, why did fry pick leela in that head sholder episode? it was a stupid choice if you ask me.

I'm rather in a disagreement here, because being a Fry fan I want him to myself, and you all being Amy/Fry shippers, you want him with her...

BendingUnit1141: One of them... heh, that deserves a nomination of some kind.

I know!  Let's break them up.  Then, you can have Fry, and I can have Amy.   big grin

No, wait.  That won't work.  They aren't together.   hmpf

Also, they're not real people.  They're fictional characters.   frown

He calls it getting smothered... I would call it exactly what I would want. In the context of the show I can see why it was done like that however... but still, stupid Fry, stupid, stupid, stupid!   roll eyes

Fry dumped her cause he wasn't in love with her. If it's someone he loves he doesn't seem to have a problem with commiting.

Yeah, I'd have one too, if I didn't like my Bender avatar so much.  It's good to be the pharaoh.

Hey, she's not stupid - she's a consistent C-student!  big grin

Amy's probably more naive than stupid. After all, she's the sole heir to a multi-billion dollar fortune, so she's had a totally protected life and had no real *need* to push herself mentally. But if the Wongs were bankrupted and Amy had to look out for herself, I bet she'd have picked up enough from the Professor to knock up a death machine or two. She's certainly not working at Planet Express for the money...

I dunno, payndz. I know you're an Amymaniac and all ( wink) but I honestly can't recall a time when Amy has been shown to be anything but a bit of a *ahem* less-than-intelligent klutz, except maybe in TSHL where she's assigned to clean Bender (and maybe in I, Roomate when she's working with Leela on the inside of the ship).

Having said that, though, as you've pointed out yourself (frequently  tongue) Amy hasn't really been shown that much recently (except in conjunction with Kif), and it may just be that we don't see her doing her incredible engineering feats, or maybe there's been an active trend to make her seem less competent.

Of course, I'd be glad to be proved wrong.  big grin

A Leelaholic defending Amy? How ironic.

In "Lesser Of Two Evils" Amy was the only one who assisted Farnsworth when he repaired Flexo. Obviously she had talents that were vital to the operation.

"Amazon Women In The Mood" she came up with a cunning plan to rescue Kif. How cunning you ask? As as a fox that has just been made Professor
Cunning at Oxford University.

Or maybe the professor needed some blood.

Personally I wish they made Amy more accident prone, a real calamity Jane.

I don't think stilts are all that cunning.  Now pasting herself onto the back of an Amazonian, and disguising herself as a tatoo, THAT would be cunning.  (Also ramming into the snu-snu chaimber with the PE ship).
