I kinda like the fact he has the most mundane name of all the PE crew.  mean, Turonga, Hubert, Bender Bending Rodriguez (or Bending unit 22, if you prefer). I wonder what is Scruffy's real name?!

Well, her full name is Turanga Leela, but it seems that with mutants, the last name is like the first.

I rather would like to know what the "J" in Hubert J. Farnsworth stands for? Is it "Jay"?   :)

Well, probably a family middle name (Philip J. Fry), carried on from generation to generation...

I wonder if Mr. Groening has a middle name that he's trying to hide? Matt J. Groening?

It's an homage' to the creator of Bullwinkle J Moose (don't remember their name). That's in the S1 DVD commentaries somewhere, I think.

Wait, so, on the surface world it would be Leela Turanga, right? This is a little off topic as well, but why don't they call him Phil or Phillip instead of Fry?

I know that Phil was in memory of the fantastic Phil Hartman.  Why they decided on just Fry, is just an artistic license thing.

no it's still Turanga Leela. She would have had no way of knowing that her first name was her family name. And Fry's family does call him Phil. He goes by Fry by personal choice.

So, all this time Leela thought that her last name was Leela?

Before she knew she was a mutant, Leela called herself "Turanga Leela," and went by the name Leela, much like Fry. The question for me is who decided her parents were named "Turanga Munda" and "Turanga Morris?"

EDIT: Nevermind, I just got it. Her parents call her "Leela," so their names have to be "Turanga ...". Me slow thinker.

her parents names were also mentioned in Less Than Hero. She addressed her letter to them as 'Turanga Morris and Munda'

That's be comic genius (and obvious Groening influence) Jay Ward, who sometimes told people that "the Jay is for J."

And don't forget that J. was not only Bullwinkle's initial, but also Rocky's (Rocket J. Squirrel). And Mr. Big's, too.
