Romantically? When you catch yourself falling in love with a fictional character romantially, that's when you know you have to seek help.
That said, I absolutely love her, both from a viewer's point of view and an [amateur] writer's point of view. I find her a very deep and very likeable character. She has a great personality - she's generous, kind, strong, selfless and caring, but she was toughened and somewhat soured by a harsh childhood. I find this very appealing, and if I met a woman like that in real life, I likely WOULD fall in love with her. From a writer's point of view, she's a deep, three-dimensional character (as opposed to one-sided, flat characters - something Futurama doesn't have a lot of, which is part of what makes it such a high quality show), and she has a tendancy to get the audience's attention and pull many of them in. I was immediately attracted to Leela's character after seeing the first few (hell, even just the first) episodes of Futurama - it didn't take me long to realize that she is a masterfully written character, and she was develped wonderfully throughout the series.

Strong central female characters like Leela make me proud to be a girl. It's really cool that she ended up more successful than almost all of those kids who teased her--in your face, mean orphans! XD She has some problems because she's different, but that doesn't stop her from kicking butt. I find that really admirable. Besides, she flies the ship! How can you pilot a big, shiny ship and *not* be really, really cool? ....hey wow, this is my first post. That means I'm a poppler...don't eat me!

Futurama_Hil, please don't make me have hope in this life. But Leela, wow. Determination. Judging from my 'reality of futurama' thread, she has a rare job in a furture world of duldrums. Versatility. Hand to hand combat, ship piloting and repair. Plus, I like anyone who like to fight and handles well thinking on their feet.

the leela character is like a fortress, tough kick ass exterior constructed by years of teasing and a troubled childhood will fend off any enemy (but amazonian women) but to an ally, the city around the fortress is a great place where niceness flows though the streets, and great close friendship is easy to create, however that is just skin deep, behind the walls of the fortress lies a labirinth of mental blocks, repressed emotions, painful memories, mental will, unshown vulnerability, and or course different mindsets, there is the kick ass leela, the crying inner chile leela, nice normal leela, the angry leela, the evernally lonely leela, and the not shown yet leela that is madly in love with fry and would tackle him to the ground in a hearbeat.......you know where that one is going.
i like her because she seems more a puzzle than anything else, one which i can not solve without most likely making a horrible mistake in her character, so must sit back, relax, and wait for the last seven futurama episodes to come out. that way her character will be shown to the extent that it will ever be know, and we can all shoot wildly into the air to answer whatever other questions there may be about her character.

That was one of Matt's stated goals with the character. See if they could take this sci-fi like alien heroine, give her one eye, but still make her attractive. I'd say: mission accomplished. Anyway, I like Leela for most of the reasons already stated. Her kind, selfless nature, her strong character, her caring personality and her willingnes to use force when someone plays her for chump. It's great to see strong, independent female characters, who can take care of themself, without constantly playing on their looks (see DS9 for further examples). Or make a search for one of my old posts. Finally, I have a weird fascination with ponytails and women in uniform.

You go do that, Grim. I'll take Bender's advice and poke one out. Easier that way.
