Zapp is great, I love him. Especially if Kif says "ughh" afterwards.

I think he is to remind us of an somebody we know. The self centered guy who thinks he is so cool. We all know him, Zapp is just a little exaggerated.

Zapp = James T Kirk of Star Trek TOS. Zapp is just the tiniest bit exagerated (and I do mean tiniest bit).

Zapp is a great charactor, his love of velour is just brilliant.

Matt have said that the idea was that Zapp is  "William Shatner as the captain of the Enterprise".

And he's a good character, particular his interaction with Kif is hillarious. It's a funny to see him with Leela too, especially when he get his comeupance.

The good thing about Zapp is we saw him as the bumbling buffoon he is and we have to wonder how he can destroy a rampaging hoard of Killbots, kill the retiree people of the assisted living nebula and so on when he so stupid.

This is why I didn't like him in War Is The H-Word because we saw his leadership skills first hand when really all of his triumphs should remain a mystery.

Zap, apart from Fry, is the best character on the show. Such a shame they didn't use him more often but at least that makes his (and kifs) episodes all the more special.

Zapp's so-called "triumphs" are not due to his strategical abilities or his courage (mainly because he has none) it's because of his stupid and suicidal plans. For example, in Love Labours Lost in Space he states that his win over the Killbots was because each Killbot has a limit on kills once the limit is surpassed they become friendly... unless the kill-counter is reset. He simply sent soldier after soldier towards the Killbots until their limits were passed. Though he may not be the most heroic character on Futurama he is indeed one of the funniest. Just wish Phil Hartman could've played him.

I know. I just meant his leadership skills in WITHW was nothing like what we'd already heard about.
