I  think he's the janitor at Planet Express, that's what I saw him as. Anywho I like him because he's the most random character on the show!

Fry: "Who are you?"
Scruffy: "Scruffy. The janitor."

You thought correct.

Ehh, Scruffy's okay, as long as they don't overdo him. He's better in those 3-4 second blurps, rather than lengty dialogue, "Futurestock" almost overdid it.

i just got 2 new comics, #5 and the first crossover one, and Scruffy appears quite a bit in those two.

also, in the second part of the crossover ep there's a little joke about his obscurity... the front and back covers show all the characters and are almost identical, except that scrufft isn't in the front one. The comic's bar-code is placed over where he ought to be standing. He's only there on the back of the issue!

He has a major part in Comics #10 too. To majpr a role, they overdo it, and the story wasn't that good to begin with. Scruffy's major role, only worsens it.

im sure that is Scruffy in both 'Hell Is Other Robots' and 'A Fishfull of Dollars'.

I also think they have overdone him in the comics. It better not be like that for the rest of the show.

He did, I think. Watch Scruffy in AoI 1. The color of his hair and his cap switch from scene to scene.

Scruff!  Scruff!  Scruff!!  Scruff!

Is it my imagination or has the Scruffmeister consistently referred to himself in the third person throughout the entire show (except when identifying himself, which necessitates linking a pronoun to a noun)?

Scruffy's name may be repeated sonorously as a mantra to enter a deep meditative state where profound secrets of the universe are strewn before you like a thousand tiny stars.

Scruffy made his debut in Fishful Of Dollars as noted here and in the season one dvd commentary.

I believe he finally got a name in Parasites Lost.

Fry: "Aren't you gonna put out the fire?"
Scruffy: "No."
Fry: "Why?"
Scruffy: "Schedulin' conflict."

LOL

"Scruffy" is not his real name, of course, it's just a nickname.  After all, what mother would actually name her son "Scruffy"?  What, then, is his real name?  As I'm sure must be obvious to all by now, it is none other than I. C. Weiner.    eek

Actually, I just noticed that Scruffy says, "Lemme know how that turns out" at the baby shower in "Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch."  "Lemme" is "let me," so I guess that blows that theory.  On the other hand, "me" is not the same thing as "I," so maybe that part's still true.  To the best of my knowledge, he's never once said "I."

I hope I'm not breaking any taboos by posting thrice in a row but has it ever occured to anyone else that Scruffy is exactly what Fry would have become had he never been brought to the future?  In more than one sense, we can say that he is "Fry without a future."  Feedback?

Almost everyone's smarter than Fry.  roll eyes Besides, Fry is cooler and doesn't speak in the third person. Scruffy's just sort of... there.

Have a look at Futurama Comics #5 and you'll know that Scruffy is very much smarter than fry, and teaches fry quite a lot.

In my experience, all else being equal, refering to yourself in the third person usually makes you cooler, not the other way around.

But all else is not equal.  Fry is the protagonist and no one is going to steal his thunder.  Moreover, as I pointed out in another thread, I'm not at all convinced that Fry is stupid.

But some people might think that you have a serious problem when you refer to yourself in third person.

His name is mentioned first in AOI I:

Leela: "Who are you?"
Scruffy: "Scruffy, the janitor."
Leela: "I've never seen you before."
Scruffy: "I've never seen you before neither."

This is also his first speaking apperance.

Scruffy played the Manwitch in Leela's dream about the Wizard of Oz in AoI.  Maybe that's why in later episodes there are jokes about a Manwich (sloppy Joe), so that people who didn't get the earlier joke the first time around would get it retroactively.  confused   Again, more pop culture references.  The 1960s TV show "Bewitched" convinced America that a male witch is called a "warlock" (historical hogwash) and so now no one can think of a witch without thinking of a female.  At any rate, at least we learn that Scruffy and Leela share the same shoe size!     hmpf

Was #10 the curling (swurling, whatever they called it) issue? The curling issue sucked. It was basically a lame parody of an obscure 'sport'. Scruffy was right out of character.
