from theinfosphere.org it's been announced quote: "In a coverage of the Futurama panel at San Diego Comic Con 2011, it was stated that "Scruffy will get a boon as well, becoming a notary next year!""

I suspect that in the ninth episode of next season Scruffy might play a big part . The name of the episode is said to be: "Free Will Hunting". It's also announced that its a reference to good will hunting, and we all know where our mysterious janitor comes into play there :).

What do you all think? Will this be the episode where we learn the origins of Scruffy the janitor?

I don't mind a little development here and there... but if they overdo it it will ruin his character. The reason Scruffy's funny is because he's elusive and pointless. He's just there. Revealing lots about his past would spoil what made him so hilarious in the original run.

But if Free Will Hunting is about Scruffy, I'm sure it won't be overdone because DXC is apparently the writer.

In the CC promo which used the Fry meme you can see Scruffy stood at the conference table with the others and running towards the screen with them as they all begin to cheer. :p

It's worth noting that the Professor isn't with them too, so it's possible they're cheering at/for/to him.

I was thinking about this a while ago. At first I was thinking about how they could make some really funny story about him, and how he got the job at planet express. But as I thought about it more, It started to sound dumb, because like UnrealLegend said, thats how we know him best. But I am excited for an episode with a bit more scruffy, especially if its written by DXC. :D

Once you start explaining the backstory of every minor character you know you have run out of ideas (re: Simpsons and Bumblebee man).

I think, were a Scruffy backstory to be successful, it shouldn't be the main focus of the episode. Otherwise you might get a That's Lobstertainment! kind of scenario with Zoidberg and his Uncle Zoid. Or, sorry to say it, Tip of the Zoidberg, an episode I did not particularly care for (but I know some did), but mainly because the story felt forced ant not genuine to me.

I am weary of anymore Scruffy dominant episodes. We had a lot recently, and I am kinda burnt out on his character now. Scruffy and the washbucket, excellent. Scruffy in every episode? Ehhhh. I mean in the classic run how many episodes was he in a season? 2, maybe 3? And there were around 20 episodes per season back then.

I preferred him a lot more when he barely showed up at all, and everyone kept going "who are you?" whenever he appeared.

That was a much better running joke... when all we knew was that he was the janitor, and liked reading porn.. and that was it.

Eh, I think that gag had run its course.  Especially after the events in the movies.  For me, it had gotten to the point where it had changed from funny because it's absurd to just plain absurd.  Again, just my experience.  I am glad that the rest of the crew acknowledges his presence now, but I agree that he should not take front and center of any episodes.  He just needs to keep chiming in with his pearls of scruffy wisdom.

I agree with Louiswuenator, everyone would know who Scruffy is by now.

Unless, it turns out he's an alien who, like The Silence in Doctor Who, makes you forget everything about him when you stop looking at him. :laff:

They should make him disappear, for like an entire season, and then reappear randomly and have one of them like the Professor say, "who are you?" being senile and all, or "You're still here? I thought you left to get all weird at Space Burning Man". You know, something like that, but better. That's how they could continue the running gag, I think.

Except for Fry, apparently.  Wait!  What if Fry is a Silence too?

Hold on.  What were we talking about?

lol, after every post I read, I'm like "I totally agree with you." But yeah, I liked the running gag with him just being the most pointless character ever, but after season 6 I dont think it would work anymore.  I would like to see him in a "three hundred big boys" type of storyline, where there's like 10 different stories going on.

I agree.
