A gay couple? 

I don't know why, but ever since I first watched the show when I was ten, I thought they were a robosexual couple.  Was I the only one who thought that? Though I remember feeling surprised it wasn't mentioned in the Infosphere, and I guess URL being the lady in his relationship with Chief O Manahan kind of clinches that.  (OH BAYBEH!!)

Though it does explain Smitty's sudden retirement.   Lover's quarrel?  Smitty finding out URL was cheating on him?  Unrequited love (now that i think about it, Smitty seems to like URL more then URL likes him.)  That don't half look bad on your buttocks.

Was I the only one who assumed this?

No way dude, they are just close partners / friends... They say sexual thing sometimes, but I think it's just a joke, besides, you saw URL with Chief O'Mannahan behind the prediction proof glass...

Weird, for about ten or eleven years I just assumed they were a couple.  XD  Proposition Infinity really enforced that for me!  It could just be subtextual, since Futurama doesn't have any recurring gay characters, except that blonde guy whose name I always forget.

I think Smitty and URL are like Lenny and Carl from the Simpsons, always hinting and suggesting that they are gay, but we never actually know.

I was thinking about it, but Smitty and URL keep going on about how much they like eachother's smell, like to cuddle eachother, and admiring eachother's rear ends.  XD  Lenny and Carl I thought were ambiguous, but I always thought Smitty and URL were boyfriends.  Though they seem to be the Lenny and Carl of Futurama, you're right.   Robosexual tension there!

I kinda got that vibe from them too, but I get gay vibes from a lot of guy friends who actually aren't, so I don't really trust my gaydar anymore.

I guess they're not a couple like I thought, but Smitty clearly seems to be in love with URL.   Now that I think about it, all of the homoerotic moments seem to be very one sided. 

Url is too busy being the lady in his relationship with the Chief.  He's all Oh baby!  Oh baby!  And she's all yeah, yeah, yeaaaaaaah.

Whilst there's no way of knowing for sure (unless a future episode cements them as one or the other), I'm certain that they're meant to just be two straight guys in something of a bromance with a homoerotic subtext -like Turk and JD in Scrubs or Shaun and Ed in Shaun of the Dead. And like both of those examples, it's played for laughs.


I behave like that with one of my best friends (although I suppose he is gay) - still, I'm straight and we're not a couple so my point stands.

I think Law and Order pretty much proves that URL is at very least, straight. Chief O'Manarahan may well be a butch woman, but she's still a woman. I see men in relationships with horrendously mannish women all the time, but I'm pretty sure than most of them are straight.




Also, as for gay characters -don't forget Hermaphrobot. Plus sexuality seems to be much more of a spectrum in the culture of the future with all the rule-of-funny gay jokes that are thrown about ("Speak for yourself", "I'm not hearing a no", etc).

True, it could be that everyone is bisexual in the future, or at least sexuality is very fluid.   Homosexuality doesn't seem to be taboo anymore (unless its robosexual as well).   And there a lot of sci fi stories which have everyone being bisexual in the future, or at least it being the norm, like heterosexuality is now. 

I think of Hermaphrobot as a transgender character rather then a gay one. I wonder if she's got the op yet?  *snaps fingers in a metallic fashion*

My new theory is that URL is straight, and Smitty is in love with him.   There is being playful, and there is casting looks of longing at another man's buttocks.  It could be a bromance played for laughs, but I have to admit, if JD and Turk ran away together and got a civil union, no one would really be surprised XD

Hedonismbot is definitely bisexual.  I notice that SpaceGoldfishfromWazn's posts seem to have a certain pattern to them.  Are you any good at fanfiction SpaceGoldfishfromWazn?  I think you might be onto some of the things we don't get to see in the futurama episodes.... the stuff that goes on behind the cameras so to speak!

Hedonismbot is more of an everythingsexual.  If it can't get out of the way in time, he will do.  And if it can, well, he loves a challenge! 

Fanfiction?  I haven't written any in years because I like coming up with my own stories, but I have been tempted to write some again (it lets you breathe new life into characters that might be ignored by the writers and disliked by the fans, right?).  As for being on anything.... I WISH!  I just like discussing things, so everything I've written is either speculation or my own interpretation.
