It is very strange that both Leela and Fry go by their surname.  Both names could conceivably be first names... but they're not.

Turunga is actually her last name (hence her parents are Turunga Morris and Tarunga Munda.)   It's like China, where people put their surnames before their birthnames ( a girl called Yen Jun-Ling for example: Yen is her last name, while Yun Ling is her first, so she would be called Jun Ling Yen in England/America.    I guess its a mutant thing.)

It was mentioned in Law and Oracle thread in General how URL called Fry by his first name and some made a big deal about it, like URL was close to him (being partners and all). In that kind of scenario, a police workplace, I would feel that would be the perfect scenario to call everyone by their last name, however it's very interesting he chose to call him Phil. I think because we are all so desensitized to him being called Fry that they had to differentiate what a cop workplace would call him with Deputy this and Sherriff that vs. the work he does at Planet Express, where the employees don't really have formal titles likes that.
