How many seasons are we talking here?  Even if FOX do renew the show, I can't see it being any more than a stay of execution.

However, it brings up an interesting point.  Say Fry and Leela do get together in "The Devil's Hands".  Now what if the show was renewed?  You'd have to assume that the producers would pick up where they left off.  Maybe Matt Groening has a "Futurama gets renewed" plan up his sleeve concerning what happens to Fry and Leela.

Well, it IS mentioned on the episode description that they wrapped it up somewhat but not completely. This would seem to indicate that Matt & Co DO have at least some ideas on how to continue should the show get renewed, which i pray for every now and then

As many as it takes to mature Fry at a believeable pace. I know FOX wont give the writers the oppotunity to do this, but the entire discussion is rather academic considering the situation the show is in. That still makes it a valid discussion though. I'd say 3 or 4 seasons should do the trick.

And, like Static wrote, according to David (or was it Matt) the idol plaything-episode is not fianl, but it isn't open-ended either. So it can be a nice final episode, but the story can be picked up again.

Off course FOX in their infinte wisdom will probably air it as the season-opener.  :D

In other words Fry and Leela get together in the episode.

Or maybe something happens that forever will make a Fry/Leela relationship impossible.

Perhaps something along the lines of "What You Leave Behind" from DS9. Fry, going away with Nibbler to live among the Nibblonians for an indetermined amount of time.

That way, he can easily return if FOX picks up the show again.

Could be, but the possibility remains. The more I think about it, the more similarities I find. So many I wont list them here. It'll take way too long time and bore everybody, but they are numerous. Besides this is a Futurama board, not a DS9 board

Could also be they do get together, but this episode was made back when Matt & Co still were counting on FOX to renew the show for another season.

Scenes We'll Never See:

Fry: "Professor...you can't die!"
Farnsworth: "Philip...there is...something I have to tell you...before I go...Leela...she is...your great...great...great...great ...great...great-great...great-great-great..."
Fry: "Please,  shut up right now."
Bender: "Feh! Like that's gonna matter to a guy who barebacked his own grandmother!"
Fry: "Bender, quit jabbering and help me smother the Professor!"
Farnsworth: (muffled) "Mmmmmmmgh! Nnngh! Mmmph!"
Bender: "Muheeheehee! Yeah! Scandals are SO much more fun when I'm an active part of them! Dibs on hiding the body!"

It would upset a lot of fans if that happened at the end of the last episode ever.  Possibly too many fans.  I doubt Matt Groening would do that.

Sarge: ...a real bittersweet ending.  (relating to idle hands).

Meh, have them get together, then kill Fry. :evillaugh:  Now that would be bittersweet and memorable.

For me, the best conclusions go where I don't expect them to--or even WANT them to--but make me like it anyway. It all depends on the execution.

If Futurama were to end with Fry and Leela going their seperate ways romantically--but still the best friends they've been since the day they met--well, as long as they're happy, why shouldn't we be as well?

Or suppose (since Teral mentioned DS9) while fulfilling his role in saving the universe--or sacrificing himself for the sake of those he loves at some other supermelodramatic moment--Fry were to die (or physically change in some devestating and irreversible fashion), that would be sad and disappointing--but if done well, it would lift the series from "classic" to "Super Ultra Golden Lucky Classic-A-Mundo."

...Or they could just go the way I want, and Kif runs off with Zapp's half-Amazonian sister, and Leela and Amy realize how much they dig each other. Their graphic oil-coated lovemaking fills out the second half of the hour-long finale; Fry gets to look but not touch, and settles for a fulfilling relationship with the fembot Bender.  :D And they all live happily ever after.

It's all good. After all, I would've liked to have seen Fry and Leela consumate at the end of Parasites Lost, but throwing it away at the end made for a better ending.

That'll probably make Fry find a nice tall building, and then take one step forward.

Hmm, I completely forgot that remark by Sarge, that McGrady brings up. Makes it all the more likely they don't get together in "The Devils Hands Are Idol Playthings". Sounds more like an updated "Parasites Lost"-ending, but this time with grace and dignity for all, as opposed to Parasite that left Fry looking like an immature, but wellmeaning, idiot.

Okay, the section below grew out of a ranting spree, caused by a single thought. Take it for what it is.

Fry strikes a deal with the Devil, gets robotic hands that allows him to compose some of the most beautiful and romantic music yet known to mankind. The music and Fry's newfound sensitivity moves Leela, and she's beginning to wonder if Fry could be the guy for her, when Fry is swept away by the curse of his newfound talent. Soon his music is loved throughout the world, and Fry gets so obsessed with his newfound fame and popularity that he ignores Leela when she goes to talk to him about her growing feelings and the unresolved issues between them. Deeply hurt by Fry's rejections Leela storms out after giving Fry a good piece of her mind. Amy offer Leela a shoulder to cry on, and once Leela calms down they have a long talk. Amy makes Leela realize that she has been treating Fry the same way for the last 3 years, ignoring his wellmeant, but clumsy, attempts to talk about his true  emotions. As the days goes by Fry becomes more and more obsessed with his music, shunning all human contact. Reading through Fry's diary (yes, he keeps a diary) Bender discovers the truth behind Fry's talent, and alerts Leela. Together they go to Fry's new apartment in LA. After some harsh words and bad situations Leala and Bender realise that his new hands are controlling Fry. In a final showdown Leela chups off Fry's robotic hands, which immediately vanishes, while a demonic laughter rolls through the apartment. Fry and Leela hug, and share a moment. Both knowing that Fry's behaviour and music was the work of the devil, they silently agrees not to pursue a relationship based on these events, but let it grow naturally (there's the dignified Parasites-ending). "Come on, Fry, let's go get you a new set of hands", Leela says softly, and they walk out to the PE ship in the sunset.

Not really a wrap-up episode, not really a funny episode, I know. But this is just what my mind came up with in 5-10 minutes of ranting.   :D

I dunno--sometimes I get the distinct impression from some eps that Fry "likes to watch."    :D  Besides, we know if he made sad puppy-dog-eyes long enough, both of them would break down and let him play too.

I see a lot of the stuff in your "rant" happening, Teral. (I think what Fry did at the end of Parasites Lost was the "noble" thing to do; I just would not have done it were I in his shoes...) It's another testament to the long-term thinking by Matt and David that the whole "HandCrafters" bit (when Fry gets new hands after the T-Rex bites 'em off) just looked like a throwaway gag, but may turn out to be as important as any of the loped-off limbs in the Star Wars movies.

One day, Leela will surely recognize Fry's various inspirations--starting with her decision to remove her career chip--and the results they have yielded (including a new life of  adventure, the destruction of her unrealistic fantasies about her heritage and her "hero," Zapp, and reunion with her parents). She will realize he might be a schmuck, but nonetheless the best thing that's ever happened to her.

If it happens Static, that wont mean the relationship is a closed book, it just means it wont happen in "The Devils Hands are Idol Playthings".

He surely didn't mind "to watch" in "Love And Rocket".  ;)

I probably wouldn't have done the worm-removal thing either, but I definitely wouldn't have brought up the oil-bag and what I used to do with my old girlfriend. Now that's the immature idiotic part.

Yes, that's my prediction too. It'll grow naturally. And once Leela realises this (and Fry decides that acting like a teenager wont win Leela's heart and grows up) all should be well in Shipper land.    :D

Actually, that wouldn't be a bad ending.  Not ideal, but not bad.  If the actual ending was similar to that, I wouldn't complain.

However the following are stuff I definitely don't want to see:

*Main character gets killed. (VERY unlikely)
*Fry and Leela finish with huge flaming argument.
*The "We're not right for each other, let's stay friends" bit.
*Ending spoiled by cheap joke (ie Love & Rocket)

Just remember it needs to have closure, but still be open.  A lot of production season 4 is wrapping up loose ends so far.  Matt G said that this season would be more relationship stuff than the previous seasons, so there would almost have to be something with Fry and Leela.

I don't think Teral's ending is bittersweet, so I doubt it would end like that.  I believe it would much more likely that it will end sort of like parasites lost.  It is hard for me to think of a situation where they get together, but is bittersweet (meaning a mix of good and bad).

Just my thoughts.

Futurama will probably keep exploiting Fry and Leela until they get them together for a wedding in the last episode with Zoidberg presiding, Bender as best man and Amy as jealous bridesmaid.

Just to clarify ( I don't know if it's necessary, but here goes); Fry and Leela don't get together in my little outline. It's a Parasites Lost-ending that still leaves Fry with his dignity intact.

B3000: A wedding between Fry and Leela is probably gonna be the final scene. Amy wont be jealous though, she has Kiffy.  ;)

I'd still like to see a "All Good things..."-kinda ending (and now we're into TNG-territory).   :laff:

And in conclusion: maybe we're reading too much into these "wrapping things up" remarks. Maybe it's more like a noose. Every thing is set up, with one motion they can close the book for good, but with an equally simple motion they can leave everything wide open again.

I always saw the ep. where they got together as one that would make or break the relationship and change someone's life forever. I hope that kinda final ep. lives up to that, but then I've always been one for dramatic endings and I live by "What you see is not always what you get." "Expect the unexpected"

All right, a quick (for me) rendition of my interpretation.
...Actually, I'll leave Fry to the rest of you. I freely admit I haven't thought about the mechanics of his attraction to Leela, and don't really have a place to start in mind.
I agree with things that have been said before, but I must add something on Leela's perspective: strong women like strong men. Fry has a lot going for him, and a whole lot going against him. He does have a lot of potential to offer her. He can appreciate her like no one else alive; to most people, an alien babe is passe, a mutant babe disgusting, but Fry still remembers they're cool. And he is very sensitive in his way, has an unusual way of looking at things, is honest, and genuinely likes her without paying any attention to her eye or her breasts (both bad, if in different ways). All right, but.
He's a goddamned idiot. (And good lord, pay attention to things even _he_ says about his hygiene...   :puke: )
And you just can't have a relationship with someone you can't respect, especially if you're Leela, who has had to fight for her own respect all her life and thus values it highly. Add to this the indications she's given that she really does want to open up and not have to be the strong one _all_ the time, and it's extra important that Fry be at least slightly competent. It's embarrassing and difficult to spill the secrets of your soul to the guy who works at your office by watching TV in his underwear. Look at all the captains and warriors she's been with!
Of course, Leela seems to like Fry the most when either he's rescuing her or she's rescuing him (maybe love is a matter of defending someone...). But then again, she also likes his perspective, so I suppose she's willing to be softened. That's the problem when you grow up fighting everyone; you don't really want to keep on fighting forever, but you start to think you have to.
Oh, and having also been in the position of falling for a friend who's also a goofy sort of person, I can attest that having to stop being snide to them is a dismaying prospect indeed.

As for The Devil's Hands, I'd like to see them resolve some of their issues so as to make a relationship possible as well as likely, but not actually get together yet.

RE: Maturing Fry...

Yet another reason they shouldn't get involved in a long term relationship. Stupid(ish), immature Fry is very endearing, and incredibly funny. I love his skewed observations of the world as much as anything else on the show.

I don't know, it seems like some people are willing to sacrifice countless things that make Futurama great just in order for Fry and Leela to get together. It worries me.

In order just to get Fry and Leela together? How can these ones decide how Futurama turns out at the end? Mabey they should stop and sit back for the ride and SEE what happens instead of predicting it.
