Fry is an idiot.
It progressed the plot.
End.

He wanted his own robot hands back.

Not only is it unlikely that he could find robot devil hands cheaply elsewhere, he probably had a sentimental attachment to his own hands. If someone swapped their hands with mine, I'd want mine back purely because they're MY hands.

And he's the robot devil. He can't stand to be made to look foolish, so there's another element at play. He has to come out on top every time, have the last laugh, etc.

Wrong. That was the Robot Devil using his cunning and his knowledge of Bender to get what he wanted. He knew Bender wouldn't trade his hands, but he needed something from him in order to pass on the megaphone.

In his own words, if I remember them correctly, "Ah, my ridiculously circuitous plan is one quarter complete."

Yeah, I think it was more about the Robot Devil comming out on top than just getting robot hands again. He has to win, if he loses then his world comes apart.

If he was willing to settle for Bender's hands then that would have been the end of the episode.

Or at least, he wouldn't have appeared again and Fry's opera would have gone off without a hitch.

Think.

It was more about setting up suffering of others and undoing his failure.

I'm certain David X Cohen said he'd be back in an interview, somewhere...

Which will almost certainly be one of the run next year if true.
