Haven't found another thread like this... so, if I'm wrong in thinking there isn't another one.

So we all know Igner is stupid, he's also probably the only nice one out of the three brothers.

But please tell me that I'm not the only one that has noticed that he becomes increasingly more stupid as the series progresses, until Bender's Game, when he is really at a depressing low, even for the moron of the family.

In 'A fishful of dollars', he is clearly shown as the stupid one of the bunch, yet on re-watching this after seeing the movies, he doesn't speak with the same tone of voice, and over-all, doesn't seem to come across as that much of a moron. More evil in that episode as well.

In Mother's day, he's slightly more stupid, with the reactions about Moms bra being understandable, but yet still...

I need to rewatch the episodes again because all the details are currently running together in my head, but surely I can't be the only member on here that has noticed how his intelligence decreases through the years.

Thoughts?

It's clearly a case of Flanderization.

Of course Igner sounds and acts differently in season one, most of the characters do.

It's not just season one though, he does become progressively stupider.

I can't say that I paid much attention to any changes in his apparent intelligence level, but I suppose you have a point. However, and you're free to argue against this, to me any change in his character over the series so far has been subtle enough that I'm not bothered (perhaps that's why I didn't notice). He does seem different in BG compared to "A Fishful of Dollars," but I wouldn't say he's out of character (not that you necessarily did).

The reason why Ignar is kind of nice is because he's so dumb and childishly innocent.   He doesn't really know how to be mean and evil like Mom and his brothers.   There's something Stan Laurel about him.

Well, he's Professor Farnsworth's son, therefore a distant relative of Fry.....

He's clearly the only likable one from the family, I just love how he seems to get progressively stupider.

When I started this though, I was more wondering, do you think the directors and writers made him this way conciously, or was his drop in intelligence just something that happened along the way, as he wasn't one of the most common recurring characters?

I'm guessing that it was accidental.

Yeah, I doubt that any of the writers ever said, "Hey, let's make Igner stupider!" but if Igner saying something stupid got laughs, then they're going to have him say something stupid again the next time he shows up.  He doesn't get many lines, so pretty soon all he says are stupid things.  It just sort of happens.

He should have more lines, I like Igner, he makes me laugh a little.

Supposedly one of the earlier ideas for the show was to have everyone on Earth working for Mom.  In this version of the show, Fry and the others would have had Igner as their immediate supervisor.  We probably would have seen a lot more of Igner if they had gone that route.

Yeah but then there would have been more Walt and Larry. I don't have a problem with Larry really, his snivelling attitude is quite funny at times, but Walt just annoys me with his 'holier than thou' attitude towards his brothers. I know it's just because he's the oldest, but yeah, I don't like him much.

What type of personality would you give him?

I didn't say that I would change him, just that I don't like him.

Igner is a good character, I think he is way underrated. Sure he is not the smartest person in the show, but he did out smart his brothers and Mom in BG. Either way I hope we see more of him in the future, maybe in an AOI where he snaps from being made fun of for so long and takes over earth.

Haha, that would be interesting, I hope we see more of a developing storyline with him and the Professor. Sure, in BG we found out that he was Igner's father, but that was it, it wasn't mentioned again that the Professor has a son.

So it might be nice to see something else with that. As long as we don't see anymore mom/professor lovin'.

I don't think my stomach can handle that, heh.

So the rich, wrong stench of Mom's boney charms doesn't do it for you, eh?
