Is it me, or was Leela the punching bag of ITWGY?  Think about it, in the beginning, she gets attacked by the bug who later turns out to be 'The Dark One'.  Once she joined the Feministas, it seems she couldn't get away from Zapp in that chase, and got caught and thrown in prison with the rest if them.  They all got a 50+ year sentence.  She didn't do any martial arts in it, and Leo kept cruelly telling her off when he banned women from that golf course he wanted to make.  And before they locked the guys in the go-go cage, they all taunted the girls and made fun of them.   Then at the end, she tries to fight Leo, but he pushes her over and she didn't fight back as though he really hurt her.

The writers really treated Leela very cruelly in this movie.   Which was another reason why ITWGY was a huge letdown for me.

Everybody gets treated like crap in the future, it was just her turn.  :laff:

The only part of that which is a subversion of the norm is Leela not being able to beat Leo Wong in a fight. Though I'd say if the fight went on longer she'd have stapled his arse to his face.

All the characters suffer from similar treatment throughout the series. ITWGY wasn't any different in this regard.

I love it when Coldy gets graphic. :D

Note that she did have a detonator in her hand at the time, so maybe she thought that a fight might push the plunger. Then again, a quick side kick to the chops and Leo would be out like a dropped light bulb.

But, Leela failing gave Amy the opportunity to get all 'fore' on his ass, giving that ironic daughter-father smackdown moment. Twice.

I wondered if it was because he's a (martian) asian and so he's stereotypically good at martial arts... I mean Leo and Inez are presented as pretty stereotypical asians throughout the series, right?

They live in a weaker gravity well. Their muscles would be underdeveloped.
And none of the Wongs has ever demonstrated knowledge of martial arts.

I'd imagine Leela would have got back up and given him what for, but Amy immediately intervened so she didn't.

maybe they sat in a centrifuge for a few hours every week so they'd be able to stand up straight in earth's atmosphere without getting their spines mashed like potatoes.

How about a butterfly among me? No one ever suspects the butterfly.

IN Winny the Pooh its always the damn butterfly, poor Eeyore builds a house and a butterfly lands on it. DOWN IT GOES. Don't ever trust the butterfly. Anything that comes out of a cocoon is evil.

I agree with KurtPikachu, Leela was kind of all over the place in terms of her character.  I can understand being thrown off your game, and getting taken in by the misguided, but her personality and abilities always seemed to shift depending on what they needed for the scene.

Imagine how weak Leela had to be after letting the leech feed off her for the entire movie.

Even her super-mutant metabolism can't replenish her blood supply and strength as rapidly as the muck leech could take it from her.

Ergo, the little psychopath, Leo Wong, along with having the strength of a power-hungry psycopath, could easily overpower the leech-weakened Leela.

Don't forget that she was holding the detonator at the time (which as far to everyone's knowledge was still connected to the bomb). She could not set it down to deal with Leo since she might accidentally set it off.

I totally forgot about the detonator at the end.  While not a perfect explanation is still an explanation.

I knew something was wrong whenever Leo triumphed over Leela in the final scenes of "Into the Wild Green Yonder", but just never blamed it on the muck leech.

This may come off as "off", but Leela reminded me of Jenny from "Forrest Gump" in "Into the Wild Green Yonder". Both of them ran off to join some hippie protest group, both have an epic love-story, and eventually both were physically weakened from their shenanigans (at least Leela probably won't die from AIDS). Leela enters the hover-van for the Feministas just as Jenny enters the van for the anti-war protest group.

By the way, best wishes out to Kelly. I don't know her, but it's the thought that counts. She'll be on my mind.

That's nuts.  There's way too many connections to just be coincidence.

I'm glad you agree with me, Kickpants!  Hopefully when the season 6 comes next year, Leela will get more respect.

I like the forrest gump theory, but I do not want to have pity for a character like Leela, we all know that she will bounce back very well! Hopefully

Kurt, why don't you admit that this entire topic is just another chance for you to bash ITWGY? Most of your points do not degrade Leela whatsoever. Plus, if you really respected Leela as a character, you'd call this "The treatment of Leela in the movies" rather than just going after ITWGY itself. Unless being a cold bitch in Beast and a ball of rage in BG is somehow more respectful to you.
