While living in an irc chatroom, I came to the conclusion that any conversation was better than no conversation.

SonicPanther, if you'd like somebody to take a look at that... with the transparency thing, I might be able to help; it probably won't get uploaded for some months from now though.

I tried editing it, but I really think it was just too bad to be fixed, I'd have to remake it completely.

As for "that new girlfriend", I think she has something to do with the tentacle monster thing.

See how deep my theories can get? It's astounding.

Yeah, she's probably a manifestation of the Beast, etc. But she'll likely be a useful device to cause Leela some jealousy.

Huzzah!

Man, I don't think I've posted in here since I stopped being an avid shipper. Yes, I blame BBS in part for this, but I think I'm better off.

Anywho, in terms of this polyamorous pretty girl that Fry seems to have gotten himself tangled up with, I sort of wonder how he goes from being one of her many boyfriends to the leader of the "church" or what have you once humanity is enslaved. Also I have some sort of suspicion of Leela being immune to the Beast's powers of attraction. Maybe it's because of her serious lack of screentime in the trailer (again), maybe it's because I want to see Leela not be played the fool with her heart for once, but in any case I hope that they keep the progress made in the 'ship in BBS at least (here's hoping    ), and that some hilariously interesting things happen.

Also, I wonder how the Beast will affect Amy and Kif's relationship, since they seem set to be married?

I really hope we get some jealousy from Leela in the next one.  Yes, that would mean the writers dragging on the relationship even more.. but it'd be nice to see Leela pining over Fry for a change.  However I don't think Fry could forget Leela as easily as Leela forgot Fry with Lars.

There already have been a few occasions of course.  The first that I can remember is in A Flight to Remember, when Leela displays some jealousy for Amy:

First that glare, and then later at the dinner.  I'm sure plenty of interpretations for these "glares"; I do think there are some underlying romantic feelings in there for Leela at this time.  However small.

The only other time I remember a hint of jealousy from Leela is when Fry and Amy announce they are together - now it's been a while since I've seen the episode, so I may be wrong, but I do seem to think that there was a glare coming from Leela soon after.  However after that, she seems okay with it.

Now I begin to wonder what a really jealous Leela is capable of doing - what we saw earlier was pretty mild, like any romantic feelings she may have had for Fry at the time.  Unless I'm forgetting another incidence...

@Frida I have to admit your last few post have been rather annoying and somewhat arrogant. Don't get me wrong it's good to have you back. The important thing I think is not to try and direct everyone else. You'll never do it, no matter how hard you try. I mean look at these guys there insane (myself included). The best thing is to just do what I do, go along for the ride. You know post something intelligent or random and  useless depending on what's going on in the thread.

By the way congratulations on earning the wrath of Ralph. That always gets interesting.

I love reading those posts but I don't know if I could make one myself that wouldn't be a complete mess, and I'm afraid to find out.

I learned long ago to not care if you look like an idiot or not. Just don't worry about it and post what you think. It might be pretty good. Look at Xanfor, Coldy and me and you're worried about being a fool?

Well, as I'm listening to some awesome music right now, I'm thinking that yeah, it would be fairly interesting to see Leela patently jealous for once. Not least because of how Fry might react.

They do?  I think they'll probably wait awhile.. Amy doesn't look like she's ready to settle anytime soon.  I was a bit disappointed in the lack of A/K in BBS, but I'm glad they did get at least one mention.  Aren't they supposed to have a bigger part in the next movie?  Or am I remembering incorrectly...

Could be wrong though, as they seem to have reworked quite a few things since then, but as far as speculation goes it's the best we've got.

My favourite moment (and it is only a moment) occurs at the end of The Why of Fry when Fry gives Leela a flower.

Quote
and why?
[Bea Arthur]Why?[/Bea Arthur] Because its a kind, spontaneous, and unexpected action from Fry with no ulteriour motives. Leela thanks him without writing the gesture off or expecting it as her due. Its a simple, pure moment between the two of them that even Fry's 'one sentence too far' comment ("Yes!" ) doesn't destroy.

Also its all down to that master manipulator, Nibbler!  :)

You know, in The Series Has Landed, when Fry and Amy were introduced, it felt like they were going to build on that and I was confused because I felt the first episode had really set it up for him and Leela.

I don't know if I could yank a favourite out of my hat but certainly when Leela pulls out her career chip it felt quite significant to me. Oh my, yes *swoons*
Oops, I forgot to say why. I suppose because they only just met but he already made that much of an impact on her to alter her views.

Three moments of the series that affected me strongly:
  • The concluding scenes of Love and Rocket, with the different couples.
  • From same episode, when Leela has her arm around Fry and she sort of hoists him up a little.
  • That last "just wake up".

On a side note, I have to say that makes me somewhat uneasy; I mean, if the changes make for a better show then that's great, but too much of that and it's a 'too many cooks' scenario, and bang goes any chance of renewing the show, Simpsons' decline or not. Improvements are good, but you can't please everyone, and you only destroy what you create if you try. (In my opinion, anyway.)

To bring it back fully on-topic, as an example, them working on Leela/Fry some more is good, but not to the detriment of the story they already had in place for BWABB. (Unless it improves it, but then you could only really figure that out if you had the means to compare the different versions of the story.)

Those're my thoughts, anyhow.

@ Ralph Snart.. .thank you very, very much for your comments.  I always see you as one of the great guardians of this site and you have added always comments that give courage to those of us who are not good enough to draw the Groening characters but who still love the series to add our views. I personally think that are artists out there who can draw the Groening canon who are worthy of our praise... but there are also some really wonderful folks out there who draw their own ideals that are still worthy of praise. Matt Groening seems to be interested in new styles (read Manga) for the Simpsons and maybe also for Futurama. I hope he pursues that idea for other styles like Tintin, Marvel Comics, Archie comics (Fry and Archie look a lot alike when you think of it) ... I would hate to see Futurama done as live action but would love to see it done in other animation styles...

Hey everyone. Instead of adding artwork to this post, I thought I'd do something different. Something I wrote up, but be gentle, ok? Leave the tomoatoes at home. Regardless, feedback is appreciated too.

(( By WAVer))
There’s something about you.

 Dear Leela,
Something about you that makes my heart sing..
More than what true feelings bring, More than anything…,
The first time you placed your hand on top of mine,
My heart raced, my head felt like space.., speechless, I couldn’t utter a line..

For the first couple of years, I couldn’t express how I feel,
I came up empty, full of tears, trying to decide if my feelings were real..
I realized how much I loved you, when you kissed me on that cruise,
And those words in the stars that you blew, I knew you could love me if you wanted to..

Now that I sit here, writing the songs of my heart, but not knowing where to start..,
I know that I’m not that smart, but I’m not the shallow guy that you made me a part!
I stood in front of a spacebee, I gave you my air..,
No longer shall I shy from being the real me, let me show you how much I care.

I love you, Leela, and I know I always will..
Your eye looks into my own, time seems to stand still..,
And when you did finally tell me those three words I never thought I’d hear,
I thought I was dreaming, my heart began singing, as your gaze washed away my fears.

Thank you for finally loving me back, I swear I’ll protect your heart..!
As mine shall continue to sing, words that can sooth any sting, and never shall we be apart.

 Love, Phillip J. Fry

Ah sure, why not     ;)  Now why?

I love the entirety of the Sting too because it's finally acknowledging Leela's feelings towards Fry, and I definitely think there was more than guilt in there.  First of all, dancing in the Venutian gardens, and having a moonlight sleigh ride where he gives her his jacket hint way more towards romance imo.  Also, the scene with the honey that they cut out where Leela jumps at him and tastes the honey on him...

Romantic feelings for Fry are definitely in her subconscious in my opinion.     ;)

And the hug at the end was one of the sweetest moments in Futurama.

This episode is one of my favorites, too.  Leela does show her feelings for Fry as well.  Fry (who is not good at communicating how he feels) also had the chance to finally show Leela the kind of person he really is.  When I watch this episode I think it's very haunting that the words Fry says to Leela in her dreams are what he is actually saying to her in the hospital, just filtered into surreal images in Leela's dreams ("I'm just gonna keep talking even if you can't hear me", "The Leela I know wouldn't give up so easily." )It was neat as well to see all the physical props at the end that might have inspired Fry to tell her all about the Space Gardens and the Ice Rings that she then heard and incorporated into her dreams.  BTW, I like Fry and Leela the best when they are enjoying each other's company as friends- they really do enjoy being around each other.  Leela does not like being pressured, but otherwise she likes his company very much.  This episode did show their love for one another as friends and that possible romantic relationships could build on that friendship.

I agree. He ought to just stop worrying about making their relationship official - she's scared off by being pushed into 'girlfriend' status. If I were Fry I'd just do stuff with Leela, for Leela, and to Leela, without attaching any expectation. I think she'd appreciate that.

I completely agree with everything you've just said. Also I think the main clincher to support that is the line;

Leela: "The only time I feel alright is in my dreams, with you. Three spoonfuls. Then I can dream forever."

I don't think it's physically possible for somebody's subconcious mind to scream something any louder than that.

Nice to see someone sees things the way I see 'em.  I am a shipper deep at heart, but still I love even more  that Fry and Leela are good friends- they have not yet figured out that this is the best part of their relationship.  I've always thought the best, most powerful - and most under-rated  love out there exists between friends.  It is the love that has the least conditions attached to it and, by its nature, if it grows into something more it is still based in the notion of friendship so it is a very strong attachment.

It is inspiring how many long-term (very long-term relationships) out there evolved from people who were good friends and never forgot that their relationship was always based in being good friends.  You can outgrow love, but it is very hard to outgrow friendship.  I have to do some research, but I had a Swedish boyfriend many years ago (and yes, we are still friends) who sent me  this lovely Swedish- translated into English-  poem about the love between lovers and friends.  It summed up the Fry/Leela thing beautifully with the analogy of the happiness that two long-term  lovers who are now in their older years yet  who are also friends find in being able to enjoy a moment of walking home together in the rain under a shared umbrella and enjoying the priveledge and chance to spend time time together as friends who are also lovers- the idea is that the friendship is what fires up their relationship and keeps them together over the years. I hope I can find it again. It was a very beautiful poem.
