Noe Schitt...

I had an epiphany on this thing the other day, but then the chiropractor twisted my head and it disappeared again (old shoulder injury, might tell the story some day).

I think it went something along the lines of Leela being in denial, not out of spite or malice but because she's scared that getting together with Fry would inevitably mean a break-up at some point, like every other relationship she's been in up to now.

I'm sure this idea has come up plenty of times...

More times than Sal has jobs, probably...

But then, what hasn't?

Another thing that has probably come up is that Fry has very little restraint when it comes to Leela, because he doesn't think enough to be insecure, and as a result it doesn't really occur to him to try to play hard-to-get or some such. Hence why it could be interesting to see how he might react if she ever does start pursuing him.

He'd probably have a similar response to when he found out how much was in his bank account in Fishful of Dollars.

This thread needs more hippity hop... and Nelly Furtado.

Yo, this is a lesson in friendship
The depths of a kinship
What women and men begin with, and then slip
My pen drips
As I scribble my thoughts on thin strips
Of emotion
A fraction, seduction, attraction
Eruption of passion
Corrupts if a lasted friendship's involved
But love to cross the line
But that's why we built these walls

We been friends for a long time, a very close friend of mine
Love you like you was mine, but respect a thin line
I love you like you was mine, think about you all the time
Very close friend of mine, but respect a thin line

Opposite's attract
When the female and male come in contact
Sticky situation in fact
Tryin not to let the feelings catch
But there's a thin line between both of y'all
So you respect that
And entertain the idea, but get brought back
To reality, and could you really live with that?
Decision, based on intuition
You love and keep your distance
Hug and kiss in friendship

An ongoing kinship, we was people to begin with
Disrespect was not intended
but your feelings sparked the sentence
Sometimes you're too intense in your quest to invent
The perfect man, please understand, my rhyme is your repent

We been friends for a long time, a very close friend of mine
Love you like you was mine, but respect a thin line
I love you like you was mine, think about you all the time
Very close friend of mine, but respect a thin line

This was a lesson in friendship
I stress in this sentence
Should women and men be friends first?
And then slip?
My pen drips as I scribble my thoughts on thin strips
of devotion

Opposites attract
And best friends make a perfect match
If you only knew that
Once you cross, ain't no turning back
The minute you let him in it and he hit that
That's that

We was people to begin with, but you was too relentless
Jeporidizing kinship, respect is intended
Resolve is my intent
While we got it in
I'm tryin to salvage a friendship

We been friends for a long time, a very close friend of mine
Love you like you was mine, but respect a thin line
I love you like you was mine, think about you all the time
Very close friend of mine, but respect a thin line

I  think what Archonix was talking about is what I call the "double or nothing" situation. Where Leela thinks that if she gets close to Fry and then something goes wrong she'll lose him as a friend. Since he's the only real friend she has she's happy to maintain the status quo rather than risk losing Fry entirely. Granted that would never happen because of Fry's determination but that's how it is in her head.

Well that's my theory anyway. Is that close to your epiphany Archonix? If not you'd better call the epiphatree because I can't help you.

That's a good theory.

Here's a parenthetical reply to one of Ralph's objections:
I'm not sure why BBS didn't turn me against Leela.  I suppose I'm in too deep to let something like that ruin her character for me.  I agree that her treatment of Fry is quite repugnant; just the fact that she was not the ex-Mrs. Fry (or at least formerly engaged) two years after Devil's Hands really makes me wonder if we're supposed to take their relationship seriously.  It seems like the only thing in the series that is supposed to be serious, but it is hard to stomach it when it gets treated that way.

I guess I'd rather grasp at straws than drown in the vortex of a failed Fry/Leela relationship. This is a bit more than a straw, but I'm not sure it can hold me up though.

That The Sting, a very shippy episode, was included on the 'Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection' DVD compilation release indicates a fondness on the part of the producers for the relationship.

What about when they all said that they wanted to get fry and Leela together during the Why of Fry commentary? They were also talking about it in the commentary for the HIOR animatic.

Oh we're on alternative ships again? Then one I thought of a couple times was Mom and Scruffy... that would be something different.

Or how about Mom and Nixon's head - now they would be an interesting combination.
