I found this on today's "Love and Rocket". I'm sorry if it is hard to tell in the screenshot- it might just be easier to pull up that small scene with a DVD.

It's best to watch it in motion, but it looks as if Leela is leaning on Fry's shoulders. Is it really so, or am I just hallucinating?

I'd like to see an episode with Fry temporarily in a kind of dark gritty persona for whatever reason.

Coldy: What about Fry in A Fishful of Dollars? The scene in his new asbestos-laden apartment portrayed him as being rather fatalistic... and he was unshaven too! Well ok, it's not much, but yeah, Fry with a vengeful streak would be fun  smile

Silly question: who would he want to extract revenge from?

Yeah bendy, that was the closest he ever came.
Vengeful, yes... I'd like to see him pushed too far by some adversary (I don't know who... Zapp Brannigan? The Brainspawn? An evil clone of himself?), and his fortress of mild-mannered idiocy collapse to make way for cold bitter fury.
Leela's reaction to such an instance would be interesting. She tends to depend on fry's humour and irreverance as a foil to her own more serious nature - in AFoD she was somewhat disconcerted (and perhaps lost?) when Fry was moody; maybe losing him to a dark pit of seething anger would reinforce just how important he is to her.

"Dark pit of seething anger" and "cold bitter fury" don't exactly sound compatible with Fry's easygoing nature, but it would make for an interesting episode, I guess. If such a thing were to happen, it would have to be a more serious adversary than the Brainspawn or Zapp, I'd think. It would probably have to be a darker episode more along the lines of The Sting, where something serious takes place. Probably with Leela being in some kind of real danger.

Maybe if Fry's parents appeared to miraculously return from the dead, but were then revealed to be nothing more than cleverly-disguised androids sent by some bad guy for some nefarious purpose.
The resulting emotional landslide would send Fry over the edge, as it did when the same thing happened to Peter Parker in a Spider-Man comic of the late 80s...

I've spent most of today reading comics, forgive me.

Leela could be dating another 'important' loser after all Fry has doen for her.  Any person can only take so much rejection - he could turn off his feeling of unrequited love and become distant, moody or even hateful towards her.

It's happened before in real life.  As a matter of fact, that's how I'd like to see Leela realize that Fry is important to her and that she needs him (as more than a friend or safe-guy).  I'd like to see her chase after him for a short while.

Be a lot of work she'd have to catch up on though, in the chasing department. To make it fair, as real life always is...
At what point does there become too much conflict? Will Leela and Fry ever get sick of it, stop and stare at us through the TV and tell us to bugger off because the more we watch the more problems they encounter since we won't be as interested in them if they didn't have any problems?  tongue

I think it is quite conceivable that a passive character like Fry could potentially be a seething cauldron of explosive rage. It could be argued that Fry's entire persona of indifference and couldn't give a shit attitude is a reaction to hid fathers insane patriotic attitude, the dad was the epoch of metal rod up the ass militaristic patriotism, and very stupid into the bargain. I reckon that he probably subjected the boys to rigid military drills in preparation for those ICBM's from the Kremlin!. Anyway all of this could well have contributed to an underlying cess pitt of un expressed rage, just waiting for a trigger.

I reckon that Fry would need to be getting somewhere with Leela and then for her to pull out in favour of an affair with the Zapper or someone equally abhorent?
For those who would find this change of character too extreme for a permanent change it could be done in the context of a one episode alternate reality scenario, either in a dream, another dimension or due to some sort of alien influence.

As Leela and Fry's characters are pretty much opposites of each other, I'd think that if Fry became serious/dark/moody for an episode, the authors could use the opportunity to make Leela loosen up a little. Now that would be something  smile

The only problem with Fry being someone with repressed feelings is that traditionally, such characters are portrayed as "unusually normal" people, with a meek, rather than easy-going attitude. To me, Fry comes across more as a slacker than someone who's overcompensating for some past misdeed.

Yeah, I think if we were to see a darker side of Fry it'd have to be through a new series of events, not based off of his "troubled past" because I really don't think Fry sees his past as that troubled, and it doesn't really effect him as such. An episode where Leela chases after Fry would be intriguing, especially since it would be done well (as opposed to Tongueluckian shipper fics). I think I may be getting ideas...

"Tongueluckian" is a word now?  tongue

Again, Fry is too much of a guileless slacker to have any real "seething cauldron" of suppressed feelings or reflect too much upon his past. If such an episode were done in canon, they would have to come up with a very convincing explanation for why he would be acting dark or bitter. It's not really in his usual nature.

km73, I could tell you about how some very angry people can appear to be happy-go-lucky slackers on the surface to the point where you'd never know they had any issues at all until their face starts to turn a funny colour.

 smile

It's about portrayal though. People with anger issues are usually portrayed as stand-offish in fiction no matter how they might act in real life, so you're right; Fry isn't likely to have that sort of problem. More likely, if he turns into that, it'll be because he's been rejected once too often or experienced something he sees as a betrayal.

That said, there are times when he's been shown to be quite bitter about events in his life, so who knows?

To me it would introduce a new dynymic if the series had Fry stop chasing Leela and her start to wonder why.  Then it would dawn on her that she secretly enjoyed his devoted hero-worship and that he actually means more to her than she thought.  Then she would persue him in hopes that he's not going to get away from her.

Yes, it's been done in some fics, but it would be nice to see as an arc (more than a few episodes) on TV.

Listen, even an animal will learn to stop doing something if it causes pain.  Fry's dumb but is capable of learning - if Leela keeps hurting him there will be a point when he will give up on her just to stop the hurt.  He was about to give up on her in TWoF, only Nibbler's 'pep talk' made Fry go back to the future in hopes that he would be able to win her heart.  So we already have a precedent where he was ready to give up on her.

Yeah, I think Leela would be shattered if she found that Fry had given up on her, and be suitably astonished by that reaction in herself.

Second. Her rejections to Fry have became a daily part of her routine. If she didn't have that anymore, she'd have the same reaction if she didn't bother to go to the bathroom anymore.

I think Fry giving up is possible but I don't think it would be permanent. He would either do it to see if it would make Leela realize how much she needs him (which seems a little to intelligent of a plan for Fry) or he would give up because of his constant failure. Either way I don't think he'd be able to keep it up for long. It's kind of like an addiction, she causes him lots of pain but he physicaly, mentally and emotionaly needs her. I'm gonna hate my self for saying this but: "He can't quit her."

Knowing Leela, she would of course intervene because of her pushy and bossy personality, and then claim that the reason she intervened wasn’t because she secretly loved him, but because she was worried about him.

Worried about him that he wasn't chasing her anymore? She would have to find some justification for that. I suppose she would probably say that he wasn't acting like himself or something.

There's another scenario where Fry would stop chasing Leela: if he found another Lucy Liu-bot. I found it a bit strange that Leela didn't seem to care that much when Fry was attached at the lips to the fake actress.

Oh yeah?  Why was Leela so concerned about Fry?  He was happy and not bothering anybody with his Lucy Lui-bot

Of course in two short weeks we will have new material to speak about their relationship...

Hehe, I like that Kirk poster.
He is The Man.

Leela often appears to demonstrate negative concern over Fry's relationships - like Umbriel, Lucy Liu-bot, Morgan, Radiator Woman (heh). And when she has no reason for outright concern, she instead shows disdain, like when he's with Amy:
"I'm sure you'll be back to zero (women) soon enough."

It's probably her weird self-deluding passive-aggressive way of manifesting her jealousy.
