Judging from the torn up house he and his family lived in, I'd say maybe he did.  In the latest comic, Fry was talking to Leela and Bender whilst getting into the Earth's core about how his father lost his job and they all had to eat dirt.

What is everyone else's take on this?

I don't think they are hugely poor. Like I think they got by ok. But I think they did have a bit of a lower socio-economic status. And I get the impression that they don't fix their house because they don't want to and are too lazy, not because they can't afford it.

Fry is content to live in near-povety conditions in his adult life. He doesn't see anything particularly wrong with this. Such indifference to financial conditions is usually the result of being brought up in a poor family. I'm the same, and it's not all bad - you gain a more realistic set of priorities and become less materialistic than the rich snot down the road with his new Lexus.

Well, I don't know if it's pverty, but Fry's dad seems like a crazy cheap bastard, the only food he seems to buy is bologna and bananas, there's also a joke in a Futurama comic that Fry's dad was envious of Al Bundy for having the life he always wanted

Their house was dilapidated.
