Light must be virtually instantaneous in the Futurama Universe. But if the commentary is correct about old light and new light then they'd be seeing the cosmos in double-vision, old and new, with 'updated' images of stars overlapping the older lagging images. That would make the night sky very confusing indeed.

I'm being a pedantic shit. Feel free to remind me it's a cartoon, knock me to the ground, and jump on my head.

Not at all.  Like I said, it's fun trying to reconcile the world of Futurama with our basic laws of physics.

Yeah, I've come to the same conclusion.  Since the PE ship can't travel faster than light, light must be moving pretty fast if they can get to the edge of the universe and back within a week (see The Route of All Evil).  Lightspeed must have been increased exponentially by billions upon billions of magnitudes.

So if someone lights their fart on the other side of the galaxy you can see it in real time.

How is this shippy, just out of interest, seeing as we've come to the conclusion already that Leela won't be able to see the note.
Just asking.

I'm reminded of all the times my mother used to scold me for being a scientist at the dinner table.

Okay... shippy, eh?

Would Leela have helped Fry find his seven-leafed clover if she didn't love him? Of course not - it's a silly idea. She's too sensible to go in for something as stupid as that, yet she trekked around in the underground ruins with him, and then went into orbit to defile a grave, because it was important to him.

I apologize for carrying on a coversation with coldangel_1.

Actually, I am sorry for going a bit offtopic there.  I was originally just pointing something out that I thought everyone already knew, but they didn't already know and then it just spiraled out of control from there.

Here's a thread about the physics in futurama, if anyone is interested in carrying on the conversation elsewhere.  This way we won't pontentially gunk up the shippy thread.    :)

What do you think Leela's parents think of Fry, and would they encourage her to go out with him? I reckon they like him; they seem like fun people, and Fry did help them reunite with their daughter. Plus they had the note that Fry wrote to leela expressing his feelings up among the stuff they'd collected of her. And Morris seemed pretty friendly to teen-Fry in TMLH. Added to which, they've been watching Leela's life from below and have probably seen one or two of the nice things Fry's done for her. If they're like any other parents in the Universe they'll feel it's their duty to meddle a bit.

I think...That Leela's parents would encourage her to go out with Fry...Because they must have relised, even if Leela hasn't...That he cares for her.

At the racetrack, although she rolls her eye as a force of habit, Leela doesn't hesistat to give Fry a kiss for good luck.
Justified, I’m sure, as the less undesirable of two alternatives.
Justified in Leela's mind, that is...

Again justified on the grounds that Fry will do it regardless, so she needs to be there to keep him out of trouble save his @$$.

The reason the PE ship can travel between galaxies so quickly is that the speed of light in Futurama has been made faster – trillions of times faster - than what science says it is now.
The PE ship can fly 99% the ‘new’ speed of light, not faster, so they wouldn’t be able to beat the starlight from Fry’s message back to Earth with any time left to see it.

In other words, where Morris and Munda are concerned, Fry is LIGHT-YEARS ahead of the nearest competitor.

Leela, on the other hand... Leela will take a boatload more convincing.

Leela: MUM, DAD, will you please stop going on about Fry!
Munda: But he's such a lovely boy Leela
Morris: He did save your life dear.
Leela: But he's a slob and irrisponsible and he's dumb and immature!
Munda: Your father was just like that, except he didn't throw himself infront of a space bee for me.
Morris: And I like him, he'd take care of you.
Leela: I do not need taking care of!
Munda: Everyone needs somebody Leela, he does love you.
Morris: It was all in the letter from him you flushed down the toilet.
Leela: YOU READ MY MAIL!
Morris: You flushed it, what was I suppose to do, ignore it?
Leela: YES
Munda: All we're saying is he's a nice boy and you should give him a chance. As much as I love you, you have your faults too Leela, he's already seen past them.
Leela: I wil not, I do not, he has not.
Morris: See, you're stubborn, just like your mother. You also are highly strung, again like your mother.
Munda: That'll do Morris. Leela, we love you, and we only want whats best for you. If you can't look past his faults, than help him change.
Leela: He wouldn't accept my help.
Munda: He would if you offered it. Give it ago, for me...
Leela: AHHHHH, Fine, I'll help Fry and if he improves then I might give him a chance! Happy?!
Munda: Very, now off you pop dear, Fry isn't going to improve on his own.

My take on Leela's parents opinion on Fry:

Excerpts taken from my fic, which i desperately need to update.

Excerpt #1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So…” Morris started, “You and my daughter…complicated relationship?”
Fry nodded. “I’m tryin’, but it’s hard. I’m not always so smart. I don’t always do the right things. And sometimes Leela gets mad at me for it. I think she wants someone smart like she is.”
“Keep working on it, she’ll come around.” The older man encouraged. “There’s more important things than being an intellectual. Munda didn’t exactly fall into my arms the day I met her. I had to chase her around for a while.”
Fry brightened somewhat, hopeful that with Leela’s parents on his side, putting in a good word for him, Leela’s perception of him as possible boyfriend material might change.
“So you’re okay with Leela being with someone like me?”
“As much as the thought of some man putting his hands on my little girl makes my skin crawl, it is what she wants. And I’d much rather see her with someone like you, who loves and wants to protect her, than with someone who just wants to exploit her. Like that Brannigan bastard.”
“You saw his webpage I take it?”
Morris growled with contempt. “Worse. I saw the pop-up ad.”
“But you,” Morris continued, suddenly throwing his arm around Fry’s shoulder and drawing the startled man up close. “You wouldn’t do anything like that to my baby. Because I know where you work. I can find out where you live. And I can make it look like an accident.” Just as suddenly as Morris had grabbed Fry he let him go. Incredibly intimidated Fry edged away.
Once again relaxed and cheerful Morris gave Fry a friendly pat on the shoulder. “Basically, don’t hurt my kitten’s feelings and we’ll get along just fine.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt #2

“So, Leela,” Munda started now that she knew her daughter was still awake. “What’s going on between you and Philip? He seems like such a nice man. And so devoted.”

Mood effectively blown to pieces, Leela’s eye snapped open. “Don’t you think that’s getting a little personal?”

“I don’t mean to pry, honey,” Munda responded seeming chastened. “But it seems I made a faux pas at dinner tonight and I wouldn’t want to embarrass you like that again. You talk about him all the time, and you’ve never mentioned there being anyone else, I just assumed that…”

Leela shifted onto her back, making it easier for her to see her mother.

“Long story short. He loves me, I don’t love him. At least, not in the way he wants me to.”

Munda looked disappointed. “But he’s such a sweet boy.”

“I like him.” Morris chimed in.

“Dad! You’re not helping!” Leela tilted her head back and glared at him.

“What? Any guy willing to throw himself between you and oncoming death gets my automatic approval. I can’t help it. It’s a dad thing.”

Leela sighed. “I’m not saying he’s not a nice guy. He’s a very nice guy. But he’s also very immature, reckless, uneducated, unambitious, and often oblivious to the feelings of those around him.”

“Maybe all he needs is a little incentive and someone willing to give him a chance.” Morris offered.

Leela ignored him and continued: “And I’ve yet to see him in a relationship that wasn’t all about sex.”

“Does he throw himself in front of space-bees for those girls too?” Munda asked pointedly.

Leela sat up, annoyance clear on her face. “Okay. This conversation is officially over. I’m going to bed.” She gathered her blanket up as she stood, so as to not trip herself and huffed up the stairs in a wave of indignation.

Munda looked a little hurt, but Morris couldn’t help but laugh.

“Ten bucks says they’re together within a year.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In short, i think they like him.
I actually have a different theory about why she went with him (to Orbiting Meadows, at least) that has less to do with shipperdom and more to do with sympathy for him and her own insecurities*, but there's virtually no backing for my thoughts in canon, so.... yeah.     :p
Also, making sure she exepts none of what Fry does is a way of keeping herself safe. If he goes around proving his love for her, then maybe, little by little, she will start to love him to. That probably makes her feel insecure(what with all the failed boyfriends)and will resent his attempts instead of appreciating them. But once she learns that Fry would never, ever do something to hurt her, well....who knows.
