Yes, keyboards are annoying. But we have to get back on-topic. Here's a choice. What was shippier? The Why of Fry, what with Leela's on-the-lips kiss, or The Sting's subconcious emotions? the Sting is still my favorite episode, but what's shippier?

My favorite shippy episode is definitely parasites lost.  I LOVE the holophoner part.  It's my favorite in the entire series. As for which one's shippier, the sting or the why of fry, I'd have to say the Sting.  Leela realizing what fry means to her and how happy she would be spending the rest of her life with him is the key to getting those two together.  (i think)

Well, "The Sting" is shippier standing on its own, but I always thought that "The Why of Fry" had greater shippy potential, just in case they ever revisit the night he was frozen, while he was under the table. If Leela ever heard that, who knows what would happen.

Ummm they're two of my fave episodes but the shippier one?

Ummmm... maybe The Sting... it shows Leela's true feelings and I think gives us a clue to how they're really get together (Fry will not be there anymore and Leela will realise her feelings for him), plus it's really romantic how Fry never left her bedside the entire time.

But then The Why Of Fry is the first time (I think) that Leela seems to consciously realise her feelings for Fry.

In The Why of Fry Leela realizes he means a lot to her, and that he makes her happy, but in The Sting he becomes her reason for living, which is substantially more important.

Well put, coldangel. You're really starting off well here in PEEL.   :) You should've seen how I started...
Anyways, it seems as though everyone agrees that The Sting showed more shipiness. I quite agree on that; when I want a dose of shippy, I usually skip right to the last 30 seconds of The Why Of Fry, but tend to watch the whole episode of The Sting. I wanted to see if anybody thuogh differently, but I guess not.

Oh, and congrads on your rise to Liquid Emporer, Xanfor!!! Let's all give him a hand! *claps*

Yeah, you should have seen how KitKat started...  :p jk

The Why of Fry is focused on Fry, and Fry's point of life. Leela's the sub-story, her love life. The two are connected by Leela being in Fry's life, and Fry wanting to be part in her 'love life'.

I can never just watch the end of that ep. There is so much foreshadowing in the middle.
See, everytime she is excited or has news to tell; Fry is the first to know.
They're relaxed around each other. In the locker room Leela's in nothing but a towel, and no inappropiate dirty giggling from Fry at all!
Leela trusts Fry. She gives him her keys to walk her pet Nibbler and generally look after her things.
Fry giving up his old life and saving the universe solely for Leela is just as big a step as throwing oneself into the way of a deadly stinger; his life for hers, because he wants her happy, because he loves her.
To cross reference to prove my point; the whole freaking 'Leela's Homeworld' episode is Fry trying to make her happy. Not score her as a gf, but to make her happy.

If those aren't tears of happiness, please stop crying. - Fry

Wow, tastes like fry, that was a wonderful shippy observation, and your art is amazing too.

One of my favorite moments of LH.

What we need more of in the 13 new episodes is Leela caring more and more about Fry and discovering that he is the one that will make her happy for the rest of her life.  That's the only way to get this relationship moving forward from this point on.

Wonder what would happen if Shawn came into the picture...  More adorable jealousy from Fry hopefully!

I can't really put my finger on what's so inspiring and touching about Fry and Leela's romance... especially for me - I'm about as romantic as a hand grenade lodged in someone's anus. What is the secret?

There are people who pay for that pleasure.  ;)

Anyway, my wife identifies with Leela in so many ways - she's spent her first few years in the US lving in dorms with nowhere to go for the holidays.  She's pretty well estranged from her family.  She had severe self-confidence problems.  She hooked-up with low-life creeps who used her.  Then she met me - a guy who appreciated her for being her.  Of course it took me a year to convince her that I was worthy of her time - now we're happily married.

Anyway, Leela and Fry have their personal demons that makes them human.  Together, they are more than the sum of the parts.  Their flaws and the way they compliment each other is what makes them interesting.

I think almost any livng person that has been involved in relationships can identify with both characters.  The issues of unrequited love, of being used, of being rejected for somebody who is bad for the other, of being treated like 'a friend' instead of something more.  Fry and Leela represent that and we respond because we see some of those issues in ourselves.

Question: Plenty of fics have depicted the ending of Fry opera. Some are shippy, some are sad, and some make Fry and Leela 'just close friends' again. This is a difficult task. I can't even do it. Now that the series is returning, how can they resume without letting us in on what happened in there? So the question is, what do Matt and David plan to do?

'Leela's Homeworld' is my favorite episode. To tell you the truth, I kept bursting into tears the entire following week, and I still do whenever I hear that song. That episode was a major one for all the characters.

    • Leela - She found her parents.
    • Fry - Not only does he care for her (See entire episode), but we can also she how much he cares for children in general. (Look, I'm trying to save someone. I'll have to come back for those later!)
    • Bender - Eh, believe it or not, this is a big episode for Bender. Notice him showing compassion for a second, without selfish ramifications? (Aww...) It's small, but I've always thought it tantamount to Spock smiling and yelling 'Jim!' at the end of the Star Trek episode 'Amok Time'.
    • Leela - Oh yes, and the realization that her parents were there with her all along... That's so touching. That's what makes me cry.
Ok, now I'm done. I'll leave the serious refuting to the professionals. Like Shiny, Venus, and TLF. (BTW, KKBF, U RK as wl. (& wo sas I cnt us shrthnd?))

    Kudos to Xanfor indeed!

Now that that bit of "Hopeless was gone for far too long" house cleaning is finished...

I second my friend KKB-F on the episode debate. The Sting gave us about as much insight to Leela as the rest of the series combined. That's a damn shame cause she's such a central character.

Ralph is also correct. Futurama is nice 'cause almost anybody can relate to at least one character, sometimes more than one in the same episode.

Ok, so the house cleaning wasn't quite finished, Why aren't y'all uniting behind Shiny? I understand why general topic people vote for others, but it makes no sence for On-Topic people to vote for anyone else. (Sorry Xanfor.)

It's true what y'all say about being able to identify with the characters. They are more human (even the ones that aren't human) than characters in shows like, for example, The Simpsons. The Simpsons is a good measuring post because it's so close to Futurama, but I never connected and engaged with the characters in The Simpsons like I always have with Fry and co. Maybe it's because I'm actually FROM the future, but I think it's more to do with the fact that Futurama characters are multi-faceted complex entities that are more than just vehicles for gags... mostly. Futurama is a far more intelligent show.

I don't want to say that Futurama is necessarily BETTER than The Simpsons...
    ...but it is.

The Simpsons has never made me cry.
Actually, NOTHING ever makes me cry. I didn't even cry when my dad was gunned down by SWAT... but I cried at the end of Jurassic Bark.

Right... this is supposed to be about the Fry/Leela romance, right? Sorry I've run off the rails.
The Sting is probably my favourite episode of the entire series. It's a true masterpiece of emotion and pathos. For me it's the defining point of the Fry/Leela relationship.

Did Fry get hurt or something? Anyways, top notch dude. Nice to see that almost every PEELer here has cried at Jurasssic Bark. And ya, I always felt that I was a bit closer to the characters in Futurama too. Fry, especially...You know how many times I've been called 'stupid?'  ;)Jeez.

That almost-kissing one is taken from my fanfic, which has a fair degree of smulch... nicely counterbalanced by a wholesome lumping of ultra-violence and sci-fi nerdery.

I dunno why she's crying in the second one, it just felt right. They're supposed to be tears of happiness, but you never can tell until you taste them. I don't know much about human emotions but I'd say she's overwhealmed by some primative psychological reproduction allure that organic lifeforms all seem to experience. Or she's just realized she's in love with him and can't contain her feminine tears of joy. Or he's stepping on her foot.
    You decide.

I think I'm the only peeler who didn't cry over Jurassic Bark! Oh, well, I always have been more of a cat person...

    Back to topic...

When do you think Fry first fell for Leela? In watching the eps, I noticed that he doesn't hint at the "L" word until the second production season in ISTE, even then  its just a quick gag... He doesn't tell her loves her until PL, in the third production season, with the help of the worms...

All this isn't to say that he wasn't attracted to her before hand, heck, he checks her out in the first ep, and he hits on her in several eps before ISTE... but I tend to think that AFTR is when he fell for her.

    What do you think?

Well in a lot of ways I think they fell for each other in the first episode down in the ruins of Old New York. Perhaps neither of them acknowledged it as love at the time, but they connected on a deep level and touched each other in a way that neither of them had been touched before. In Fry, Leela found a person who opened her eyes (eye) to the world and made her want to be all that she could be; and in Leela, Fry found someone noble and kind and willing to help him live in the strange new world. The moment when she put her hand on his and they smiled at each other - that's the beginning of their love I reckon, when they both helped each other get a new lease on life together.
They might have smooched right there and then if it wasn't for Bender.

Well, the first time that Fry admits he has a thing for Leela is in War is the H-Word, when Leela(Lemon) is asking them about girls back home and Fry admits to liking Leela to Leela(Lemon) herself noless!
In my mind I always consider the origin of their sincere feelings for one another to be in Xmas Story, when they're walking down the street and Leela makes a comment about them being lonely together.  Then a few minutes later they nearly kiss.  Granted they thought they were going to die at that moment, but I feel as if the motivation(the fuel if you will) for that (attempted)kiss was generated in the scene before it(where they realize they're both lonely) and the mistletoe is merely the spark which ignites it.
