Did the writers name that character after that politician from the 1950's Adlai Stevenson?

Well they got the name Futurama from a 1920's car ad.

More likely the GM exhibit/ride at the 1939 World's Fair by the same name. Architecture is similar too. Add some 50's tail fins too.

I think it's just supposed to sound cheesy/clique, like the character. like, "oh, chaz..." leela's got a thing for those guys... i guess "fry" doesn't sound dreamy enough

I used to think that he was called Adelaide (like in Guys and Dolls), I used to pronounce it ah-dlah-ee sort of.

I can think of many dreamy names that are cheesier than Adlai, usually named after regency area romance novel heroes.
