I think he should've used the first nuclear bomb on a uninhabited area (amybe the ocean?), rather than densely populated urban area, with no military targets. On the other hand he did pass the Marshall Plan and laid the foundations for NATO, so all in all he's probably not that bad a president.

Well, there were three or four test detonations in uninhabted areas, Teral...perhaps you mean we should have given Japan a warning shot?

Unfortunately, nuclear strategy has never worked like that.  Besides, we did warn them to surrender for like a week beforehand.

Yeah, still...nuclear/atomic weapons suxxor in principle, and Truman was the only man to use them.  But as Teral said, he did do a lot to rebuild Europe, and he passed the Full Employment Act, officially entitling the America government to regulate the American economy.  What a novel concept.

Yeah, the Japanese never saw those test detonations. If they had seen the destructive powers of a nuclear bomb on, say a remote forest area, I think they might've been inclined to surrender. Then again it might've been a dud, or they might've refused to surrender, thinking the Americans didn't have the guts to use it on population centers and military targets given it's massively destructive power, so it's a tricky grey area.

Almost reminds me of a DS9 episode.  :D

But the phrase "Surrender/do as I say, or else..." never works, just ask any parent.

Well, Truman didn't learn about the Manhattan project until Roosevelt's death, despite the fact that he had been his VP. And back in 45 I bet that those that did had decide about its use simply thought that the nuclear bomb was simply something that does make a bigger bang than the conventional ones.
And finally it was basically the destruction of the city of Hiroshima that made people realize that there was something differnt about this bomb.

But Truman was fun to watch in RTEW.    ;)

You know, they claim it was really acurate (Truman's voice) I dunno if it was true or not, but hey, let's just got with that. Loved the whole scene with "Are you coming on to me?!" in it. Classic Zoidberg

1. He was in about half of an episode.  A great episode, to be sure, but half of an episode all of the same.
2. If you really want to discuss his politics, use the politics thread.
