Is it just me or does Bender have a split personality? In some eps. he's a poor, sympatheic being ("Crimes of the Hot" ), sometimes he's a total jerk ("Spanish Fry" ) and sometimes he's inbetween ("A Head in the polls", "A Pharoah to remember", "Godfellas" )

Bender probably has moods that range the gamut of extremes. When he's mad, he's fuming. When he's happy, he spreads his love like a Care Bear giving out candy hearts on Valentine's Day. When he feels nothing, he goes into hibernation with his own neutrality.

Different episodes, different writers, different Bender.  Hmm.

Yeah, sometimes I believe that Bender has a split personality. I agree with the above post.

I duno he seems generaly a nice kinda guy to his select few friends but a dick to everyone else. Hes sorta evil but stops short of total evil

I think he's similar to early Homer Simpson:  he just really gets into whatever mood he's in.  Just like Homer can swing from different moods between sentances, Bender can too.  I think it's part of his charm: Bender's supposed to be this unemotional robot, yet he's constantly having wild mood swings.

Bender does change moods a lot. But mostly he's a mean asshole (in a good way).

I'm going to have to go with Jicannon on this one.  It seems to me that Bender is a guy deep down but puts on a 'tough guy' facade just for his image sake and usually hides his true feelings.  That or maybe he's immature in the emotional department, kinda like Zoidberg in a way.  Or  maybe Bender's got a robot version of a Polar Disorder? (rapid mood swings etc..)  It's just a guess though.  ;)

I'll go with the though guy facade. In The Sting Bender's crying because Fry's dead. He misses him.

Bender does have a lot of personality changes sometimes, he is really kind one minute and a jerk the next. But that's why I love him
I just wouldnt if he were any other way!

I thought in Spanish Fry he was mostly just being kid like rather than outright jerky... The tons of "whoo!" noises and jokes he made I thought were just like a kid and he was just proud to have finally learned a bit of human/meatbag anatomy after having lived wih them so long and having stolen Fry's blood frequently.

As for APTR he actually went out of his way to make people miserable like his friends even though they had a mock funeral for a robot, or after having put them into slave labor for his monument...

He does just want to be loved though?, he was totally upset in 'fear of the botplanet', and told them he killed a million billion humans cause he thought leela and fry didn't care about him...
I think he took it for granted in APTR..

but apparently robots don't have feelings, and that makes him very sad?

Whatever bender does is simply for attention. He does have true emotions, but many of the things he says are just so people will pay attention to him. He is not fully developed , personality-wise, but most 4-year-olds aren't either.

He usually cares about things he thinks are inferior to him, in his his opinion they consist of children, turtles, and Fry

I'm pretty certain that it's based on his his mood. I mean, you can't expect him to be just one way every episode.

Then you get bored of him, like Kif.  :p
