I  read Ludwigs post about not liking "Why must I be a crustacean in love" on Norweigan TV,  and it got me wondering.
Is Zoidberg portayed or understood in other countries as a typical NY Jewish stereotype? To me, this is what makes his character so likeable, to me he sounds like Henny Youngman crossed with Jackie Mason. This voice coming out of a huge lobsterman is just so freaking funny.
By the way, the above mentioned episode is my all time favorite.

If you're multi-luingual, then you can lisine to the translations on the DVD and see if he has the accent.  That might help.

its pretty likely the essance of zoidberg is probably lost in translation. but at the same time, its always fun to laugh at a poor hungry lobster

He's not actually Jewish (Judaism as a religion probably never made it to Decapod 10), but his voice and a lot of his character is based on Jewish stereotypes.

As far as I can tell, the French Zoidberg hasn't got any tinge of any other accent, let alone a NY Jewish one. To me it just sounds like the normal Parisian one...

I don't really find him particularly funny in French, and it doesn't sound like they tried very hard to get decent voice actors for any of them. The only voice I think they did an all right job on was the professor's, and even his isn't unique because it's used for several other minor caracters as well. From what I've heard, even the French don't like them that much, and much prefer watching the English version ;-)

EDIT I tried to put a French and English clip up here but Geocities didn't like the links. Stupid b :mad:s!

Why am I not surprised about the frenchies?

Anyway, we got it here subtitled (although I got everything off the internet since the show reached Israel only a few months ago... but all in all, I never thought of it as a "stereotopic NY jew". Are they begging for scraps?

He can't be jewish even if he wanted to, he's a lobster! he's not Kosher!

That's kinda the joke...

Also, the various Yiddish (I think) words like 'bubkiss' and 'touqas' <sp?> betray his intended parody. That, and his uncle's accent.
Trust me, he's supposed to be Jewish (when it's funny).

I must pity our poor foreign comrades-in-Futurama, as they miss a lot of the genius voice acting that  makes the show so funny. That and the writing. But the acting helps!
