Okay, I know.  Ever since TKoS, everyone's thought of Leela as mean, a self-righteous bi-er, witch even.  But I just saw "Riding in Cars with Boys"(A very good movie!) and in it, Brittany Murphy's character makes a comment that made me ponder L&F.  The background of the scene is Fay(Murphy) asks her best friend Beverly(Barrymore) if she loves her son Jason.  Beverly is slow to respond, so Fay tells her something along the lines of:
"I think that when we truly love someone, we go numb to the feeling.  Because if we really felt how much we loved them, it'd kill us."
Whaddya think?

I think you put too much faith & trust in Hollywood scripts. They're written only to make money, not to teach the children of the world the moral values of love.
"...if we really felt how much we loved them, it'd kill us." That sounds like a comical statement the PowerPuff Girls might say.
I'm not trying to be mean to you, BumbleBee Theta. I'm just being 'blunt', as usual. Emotions are powerful. You own them, don't let them own you.  ;)

And no, I don't think Leela is a mean character. She's a 'strong' character.

If you don't start sticking to the topic, I'm gonna Qualta your sorry ass.

As to the question... I think it has a lot to do with Leela's upbringing. Having spent her entire childhood at the Orphanarium, a lousy place if I ever saw one, Leela no doubt grew up without any kind of emotional nurturing.  Remember the director's greeting? "You're worthless and no one will ever love you!" After a while, you begin to believe that. So, here we have a woman who is convinced that no one could truly have any real feelings for her.... she's probably in deep denial.

Or I could be overthinking this.

Some people think too much altogether. Not pionting any fingers, of course, but some Anime fans take it WAY too far!
*cough* Nurdbot *cough*

As to Leela, well... I agree with Kryten, mostly. Leela was emotionally adrift for much of her childhood, but with Fry and the rest of the gang, she is thrown into the deep end, and must deal with emotions all around her. SO she simply brushes them off for the present, but I'm sure she thinks about it afterwards.

Or something. We ALL think too much!

You can't really blame BBT for overthinking things she does have a valid point. i've read a few fanfic that mentioned TKoS and they all made Leela out to be the bad guy. People seem to think that she kicked him out for getting rid of teh worms, but thats not what happened. She seemed kinda torn for a minute understandably, but she didn't kick him out till he mentioned Amy, and heck, If in an effort to seduce me my boyfriend told me he was gonna do exactly for me what he did for his last girlfriend and she seemed to like it ok, i would be slightly less then seduced. I don't blame her for kicking him out at all.

I think Leela isn't as bad as people make her out to be. Remember, she always saves her friends' butts. "I want to enlist. My friends usually die if I'm not there to save them", and "Those arguments aside, we're still going to get bender back". "Time for a woman's touch" (In Amazon Women).

She's just not into letting people see that she's got a gooey caramel center. Probably is being too sensible with herself in the area of her "thing" with Fry, methinks. I think the attraction's there, she just tells herself it's not gonna happen for reasons A, B, and C, and pushes him away to make sure it doesn't.

The last ep I worked on deals mostly with Leela. She's in quite a predicament, but Fry's always there for her. BumbleBee Theta will love this episode.  ;) I know I do.

Spiffy. It'd be nice if the characters actually had changing interactions, unlike most shows in which character relationships remain static from season to season.

who doesn't like leela?  She's cool. She has purple hair, a very sexy eye, stretch pants, really large breasts... She can fly the ship, beat up people, sex up Zapp, stick up for her friends... in fact the only bad thing I can think about her is that Katey Segal does her voice.

Oh gawsh. You remember when Adelaide told her he could make her look normal? The way she started poking herself in the eye? Makes me wince.

The big breasts thing... not necessary for the perfect woman, in my opinion. I agree on the Katy Segal thing though. Peg Bundy is the ultimate antiaphrodesiac.

Venus, I began working on Futurama in season 4. 0405, 0408, 0410, 0412, & 0415, so far. I did work on about 75 Simpson episodes before, though.

I think Katey Segal was cute on Married With Children. Not so much visually, but her personality was cute. And a teeny bit of it carries over into Futurama. Otherwise, I think the voice is perfect, & the cute model of Leela has just enough sexual vitality.

I think the voice fits rather nicely to the character of Leela. I don't hear Peggy Bundy when she talks, I don't even hear Katey Sagal. I hear only Leela.

Besides who can ever dislike this great character: resourcefull, trustworthy, loyal, intelligent, sexy, and other things that eludes me right now. Oh, yeah, the acturian kung-fu, just loves it. No deepth perception yet she handles the ship better than anybody else. If her friends are in need, you can bet on it that she'll be there. How many times have she saved Fry by now (late Season 2): too many to count. Saved the professor's but, Bender's, Benders banjo  :D, killed Cubert......the list of good deeds goes on and on.

If Fry is really wants to be Leela's boyfriend, he should look at the moments of real connection they've already had: teh scene in the Lunar Lander in "The Series has Landed", the minutes right after she saved him in "X-mas Story", the Valentines dinner in "Put Your Head on my Shoulder", there is bound to be others. I'm sure Leela could fall for him if he was a little more "there", rather than JUST a goof-off. Ofcourse him being a goof-off is they way he is written.

Just IMHO, ofcourse.  :D

let me put it this way.  if katey segal hadn't done married with children, she would be perfect for the voice of leela.  The voice is fine, in itself and fits the character nicely, just the baggage of the other rolls the actor has played... Most of the time it's ok, but sometimes I get that little mental image of peg bundy and it's horrible.

Personally I dont see anything wrong with Katey Segal, She's quite attractive in that older woman sort of way, (I'm only 25) though I wouldn't touch Peg Bundy with someonelse's (She smokes for one, and that hair!)

OK I've revealed enough about my warped mind and any way wasn't this post about about a new take on Leela

i love Katey as Leela. I think the voice fits perfectly.Although it does confuse the heck out of me. Peggy was in her mid to late 40's when married ended production, and she sounded 40-something. Leela is 25-26 depending on whether time is moving forward for them and she sounds 25-26. How katey pulled this off is beyond me. When i watch Futurama and then Married i can hear a noticable difference.Anyone else pick up on that, or is it just me?

It's called 'voice talent'. Katey Segals' voice talent is minimal, but it works perfect for Leela. I've heard older women with young-sounding voices. It's fairly common.
