Maybe I'm just weird, but I think one of Fry's smartest moments was in "Cryogenic Woman".... When he said (well, whispered) "I'm leaving you!" For Fry, realizing that, trapped as he was in a bleak post-apocalyptic wasteland, when his only companion was an attractive woman willing to have sex with him, that he was better off alone than with her, was pretty damn smart. Some people never get that smart...even though they're not stuck in a bleak post-apocalyptic wasteland. I'm just sayin'. (Oh, yeah, and hi again, everybody. )

Aw, man! Oh, by the way, I agree with everything Shiny just said. And also, I just remembered Fry's line in TBOIC: "So, where's Captain Bender? Off catastrophising some other planet?" Not even sure if it's a real word, but still, it's a pretty big one. (And I like his chuckle after it .) I do think Fry really is dumb. However, I think that if it wasn't for the effect of the missing delta wave, he could be fairly intelligent, or at least average. But his brain just works in a different way to everyone else's, so maybe sometimes some hidden information (or vocabulary) just pops out. Whenever he's being heroic and selfless, however, I think he's working mostly on intuition and instinct. He never stops to think about what he does, so I don't think he's quickly forming genius plans in that head of his; he's just doing what feels right. Some of that was in response to those other threads linked on the previous page, since I didn't really want to post in all of them; this seemed like the main one. And there is my opinion.

You know, the delta brainwave actually exists. I believe it's the brain wave of sleep. And I don't think Fry's dumb. I think he's just lazy. Not that he means to be, but look at the time he grew up in! And no one in the future seems to want to help him understand and fit into the 'new world'. No, they just assume that he'll understand it right away. And perhaps he was pushed down like this in his time too. Perhaps he eventually just lost all hope in ever improving himself in any way. (Except for Leela!) @Arkan: No offense intended.

Tell that to frycutiepie. And to me. I'm not sure I heard you correctly. Wait a second... I'm all messed up today... Seriously, I think he just doesn't apply himself. And it's not like a his friends do a lot to encourage him. (Take that, Bender! Oops, gotta watch who I'm talking to...)
Notice how Leela motivates him without meaning to.

Fry has many intelligent moments...like Bill and Ted of the most excellent adventures, he HAS a brain in there, but it spends most of its time in a blissful state of non-activity. This is indistinguishable from "stupidity" on the surface. But, like King Arthur who sleeps in Avalon, in moments of crisis it will rouse itself from its slumber to burst forth upon the foes who menace his home and friends and save the day; and then, its quest complete, it retires again to its sleep of aeons and timeless dreams. Naughty nerdy dreams, no doubt, but eh, I'll bet Arturius Rex has the odd mental romp about Guinivere and her handmaidens from time to time as well. Which reminds me - the delta brain wave is the wave of sleep, yes, but specifically of deep sleep, the deeper-than-REM stages in the dead of night. I wonder if Fry's brain runs on idle a lot while he's awake because he doesn't get the same level of rest that the rest of the universe does... Interesting. Oh, wait, the other thing - tedious. And as for updates...gee, Arkan, I thought if I posted outside the Fanfic forum I could avoid that sort of inquiry for a little while at least. Oh, well. The short answer is no, not yet. I just got my new (used) computer, give me a while to catch up on my heavy backlog of mindless surfing serious research first.

My favorite Lucid Fry line of all time from Cyber House Rules: "No, I'm not jealous! Oh wait, I am. But my point remains valid!"
This was when he was explaining to Leela that Adlai was only dating her because she had two eyes. He was right, and he was able to acknowledge his own feelings about the situation without undermining the larger point.
Note also that Fry's smartest moments are usually also Leela's dumbest moments.

Ok, how's this: In AOI1, Leela states that 'First I killed one person, and then I had to kill another, and another!' Fry then replies 'Well, that explains the first three killings.' How true! Leela's murder of Farnsworth only explains Hermes's and Bender's deaths, not Amy's! But how does Fry know that?

I think it was just wordplay..."I killed one person on impulse, then I had to kill another, and another!" That accounts for three people. We're supposed to fill in the "and so on and so on" at the end of Leela's sentence, but Fry takes it literally. I thought it was a hilarious subversion of a standard dialog trope.

The title of this thread is misleading. It should read - "Fry's less stupid moments"
Stupid is all Fry's got. Fortunately he's very good at it. Any moment of intelligence is a case of bad script writing.*
*Not actually my opinion
