I was watching the Simpsons episode "Some Enchanted Evening" tonight and noticed one of the happy little elves from the tv looked just like the Professor.

Here's a grab

Matt seems to have re-used the character for Farnsworth. Has this been spotted before?

I think that's just the typical old man in Matt's eyes. I don't think there's a link between them.

Considering that the episode aired nearly 15 years ago, it's obvious Groening had no idea he'd be making Futurama that far down the line. Just a coincidence.

You know there's probably only so many ways in which a wrinkly old character with thick glasses can be drawn in the Groening style. As said before, the Simpsons episode was made many years before so I don't think this is any more than a coincidence.

It wouldn't be the first time that Groening has recycled a character design.  Just look at Life in Hell and The Simpsons.

It probably wasn't even a conscious thing, though.  Like Bushmeister said, there are only so many different ways to draw characters in the Groening style.

I'd have to agree with everyone here, although it is kinda creepy to have a happy little elf, that looks like the professor.

I don't know. The drawing has an uncanny resemblence even if it is Groening's stereotypical old fogie. He may have been thinking of having another series, not necessarily Futurama yet. You know how he likes to hide things early in the series. I bet he planned it.

It looks like a coincidence to me. Maybe when he was designing Farnsworth he remembered the Happy Little Elf and drew them similar looking.

You people are talking about him as if he is some Divine Psychic.

Its just his style.

In A Clone of My Own, Farnsworth's clone rebukes his claim that imagination is what being a scientist is all about with, "No, that's what being a magical little elf is all about."

It's not a coincidence.  It's recycling.

That quote really makes you wonder....

I bet someone at the studio spotted this as well, and they added this line as a inside joke. I mean, one coinkydoink might be possible, but two on the same topic? Case and thread closed. Goodbye.

I'm pretty sure that the quote is "No, that's what being a magical elf is all about."  I don't think that Cubert says "little".
