Fry askes the question "what would it be like if I never came to the future", then he sees Leela, Bender, The Professor, and Zoidberg all together in his vision thing, which is totally messed up, because if he never came to the future, Bender would be dead and leela would still be working at the cyrogenics lab.

A little quote from the TNG episode "Parallels". I'm not one to argue with Data about quantum mechanics, so I'll accpet this as a valid explanation to this oddity. The rift wasn't a time rift, it was a rift into another quantum reality. The quantum reality that would have happened if Fry fell into the freezer-doddle and went to the future-jiggy.

Problem solved, no need for a wizard.
