We all know URL, the robot police officer has stiff, straight legs as shown below, right?

Or does he? Check out him following Bender in Bender Gets Made:

I never saw any kind of pivot or joint on URL's legs so I can't see how he could bend them like he did there. Plus, every other time his walking style is really straight and stiff, so if he could bend his legs, why doesn't he just walk like that all the time?
I look forward to the avalanche of explanations that probably won't ensue...  ;)

I have the URL Tin Toy model, and there's definitely no pivots in his legs. The only thing I can think is that maybe, as a Police Robot, he often gets involved in violence as part of his job. Perhaps a criminal damaged his legs, and he had to get a new pair temporarily until his old ones got fixed (Bender can get new legs, as he said in 'A Head in the Polls', so I’m sure URL can too). And his temporary replacement legs had pivots, because there weren't any others left. So he had to use the pivoted legs for a little while, maybe just for that one undercover investigation, until his old legs got fixed (in the future, it takes less time to fix things)...

Not a bad explanation Otis, but if you check the shot of Smitty and URL walking off after URL goes "Ah, yeah" in that scene, his legs are straight again. Though he could alternate between straight and stiff I guess. There's no real logic as to why he'd want to though.

His legs are made of the same kind of metal as Bender's visor, which can bend.  That comes from a seperate discussion, which I don't feel like digging up.

I never noticed.

And that's the end of that chapter. *swishes invisible scarf around neck*

Because he was trying to be a normal guy blending in with the crowd, he would need to bend his legs to create the illusion that he was just like the rest of 'em.

Bender's fingers bend, too, without any visible hinges. It's the same technology (bendable, strong metals, or whatever).

If I'm not mistaken, URL's legs bend in SP3K when him and smitty are fighting leela. Therefore he couldn't have gotten pivoted legs just for that one scene.
