What was the era that was going on when New York got rebulit as Medeval looking castles?  And why the castles?  It almost looked like there was another dark age going on.  Any thoughts on this?

I think that was in there so that the future wouldn't be TOO futuristic.  If anyone wanted to complain that technology or whatever should be far more advanced in a thousand years (which it undoubtedly would be), they could just be pointed at the second dark age to explain away the discrepancy.  The URL line just reinforces this.

Edit: This may or may not have been mentioned in the commentary, but it's been a while since I watched it on DVD.

  :laff:

awww...just kidding with you...but seriously folks. That makes a lot of sence.

Why castles you ask?
Because that was the only building materials they had...they only had books with pictures of castles as housing...they wanted to live simpler?

I'm actually more curious about what happened to this city when it got destroyed. Old New York's ruins are still in very good tact for a city that was completely destroyed by aliens - what the hell happened to the second one?

In this case the producers probably never came up with any kind of answers for this.  The whole bit is just a funny reference to "The Time Machine".

Castles are building materials..?
Oh well. The only explanation of the ONY ruins I can think of was that the aliens who destroyed it could have roofed it and covered the roof with soil so the trees could grow there. And it has been asked before. Nobody found the answer, so: Consistency joke/slip-up.

History goes in cycles, or something.  No mistake is ever too great not to be repeated in the future.

Except tank tops.  And the 1980s.

I agree with Nixorbo... I like the throwaway jokes that can't be explained...

...but if that second dark age really is during the 24th century, would that also coincide with the second coming of Jesus?

Possibly, but it wouldn't matter, as Jesus's second coming only seemed to affect video tapes anyway.

Or perhaps Jesus destroyed New York with his mystical Jesus-Power UFOs.

Think about it.

Don't think so. The 2nd Coming of Jesus was in 2443, which is the 25th century.  :)

But yeah, the Second Middle Ages was probably there (a) to be funny, (b) as an excuse as to why the Futurama 31st century is not as futuristic as it probably will be in real life, and (c) to cause us to debate it on topics like this.  :)

But if it was put there to make us debate it on topics like this...... then someone planned for it to be that way, and they were probably in cahoots with someone else.....  So who are they?  Those that plan our very lives down to the simplest thing as debating about a futile topic?  :shifty eyes:

Why isn't the building Fry is in knocked down as well? The building was in New York too.

Those sneaky Nibblonians probably had something to do with it. I mean, why go to all the trouble of making a prank call and freeze Fry if you don't intend keeping an eye on this the last hope of the Universe? Hence they protected the building from alien attacks, earth quakes, wars and whatnot.

Maybe they just ruined part of old new york, all we see is the outlook from the window of the cryogenic lab, we don't see what happens on the other side. Altough that would not explain why they rebuilt it using arcaic materials. hmm.
But, maybe they decided to make a themepark just outside the cryogenic lab, with a midevil(?) setting. The aliens where just demolition people clearing the way for another Mcplayground.

Will Fry be frozen again by the Niblonians, if there is another brain threat towards the planet in 4000 or will there be another "I'm my own grandpa" by then?
