The Breakfast Club features a character named John Bender, who at one point says "Eat my shorts."

Matt Groening must have liked that movie.

Bender is named after the Bender from Breakfast Club.  I first thought he was named after "I, Robot" writer Otto Binder (which is pronounced "bender").

I thought it was a pun on the slang "bender," or "drinking binge."

IMDB:Creator Matt Groening admits to naming Bender the robot after John Bender, a character in Breakfast Club, The (1985).

I think the same thing must go for Bart's "Eat my shorts" in The Simpsons.

"What was that?" "Eat...my...shorts!"

Wasn't Bender's name going to be URL (now the name of the robot cop) early on instead?

Yes, they mention it on the SP3K audio commentary. More precisely, it was one of the possible names for Bender.

I thought it was because he bends girders. but it's probably a combination of all of those. And a little off topic, I still like the version of Amy that looks like tankgirl better than the one on the show.

Nah, he bends girders because of his name.  They probably named him first, and then decided that's what he would do.

Me too -- until watching 'The Breakfast Club' recently... I think John Bender's brain was installed in a certain manbot of the future.

I think going back to X Ray's Fairly Odd Parents thing that's just a coincidence that there's a guy on it named Doctor Bender.

He's a bender robot, he bends things, why the Hell do you people got to justify everything with a million pieces of pseudo-intellectual crap? "He's gonna be a Bender robot Dave, he'll bend things."
"Gee Matt what should call him?"
"I think Bender."
"Cause of the bending thing?"
"No because of Socrates, some obscure sitcom reference nobody will ever work out and The Breakfast Club, you fucking idiot Dave."

Teral - "I think it's actually the Bender Gets Made" commentary not SP3K.  Maybe it's both!  :laff:

thats the best thing ever posted here

and further proof is in the episode bendless love, bender goes through bending school,
and on the commentary david x says that the plot came to them from the idea that bender would have a desire to bend, since thats what he was built to do

You're missing the point.

You seem to think that they came up with the idea of a bending robot, and then decided to name him Bender.

That's not what happened.  They came up with the idea of a robot.  (Not specifically a bending unit; just a robot.)  Matt Groening named him after John Bender, from The Breakfast Club.  (This is a fact.  Matt Groening said so.  It's true, whether you like it or not.)  When they needed to decide what Bender's job would be, they made him a bending unit, since he was already named Bender anyway.

So, in conclusion:
He isn't called Bender because he bends stuff.  He bends stuff because he's called Bender.

[Bubblegum Tate] Deal with it. [/Bubblegum Tate]

Asimov wrote a collection of stories the publisher titled "I, Robot", but some years before that Earl & Otto Binder (under the pseudonym Eando Binder) wrote a short story called "I, Robot" about a robot on trial for killing a human.  That story was turned into a really good episode of The (original) Outer Limits with Leonard Nimoy.

I remember when me and my friends first heard about Futurama. The first thing I ever saw was that early promo pic of Bender standing there looking a bit angry. Then when I saw his name was Bender I couldn't stop laughing. Yes Bender means gay in Englsih, but it's also a generaly funny word. Calling an angry looking robot Bender is comic genius.
Then when you get used to him being called Bender it stops being as funny, it just seems normal. But i try to remind myself just how funnny it was when I first heard about it.
