I just realised (With the help of the filename SixbyNine gave me) That "Madison Cube Garden" initials are "MCG" as is the Australian "Melbourne Cricket Ground"

I'm sure we are all aware that "Madison Cube" is a parody of "Madison Square" But is the "MCG" link ever mentioned in the commentries or something similar, or is it just a co-incidence?

I doubt they've even HEARD of Melbourne Cricket Ground. And it's hardly a co-incidence either, you're just thinking too hard into it.

It's a parody of Madison Square Garden and nothing more.

Because, you know, everybody involved in Futurama is not only Australian, but also follows cricket.

I would be more currious what Matt Groenings middle name was.  It there is any deeper meaning, that is it.

I hate to break it to our Aussie pals, but no one in the US cares about cricket unless they are from the former Common Wealth.  Hell, the Canadians don't even care.  I will admit that my cricket bat and ball always draws attention (bought when I studied in England), but I think I'm the only person I know that has even seen a game.  I like it, but I mostly just care because I've watched enough Python and read enough Adams that I had to.

I'm an Aussie, and even I don't give a crap about cricket. Hell, I didn't even know "MCG" stood for Melbourne Cricket Ground until Rage Dump mentioned it! But then again, I don't give a crap about any sport...

Look, the point is that the writers only intended it as a pun on Madison Square Garden. I doubt they even KNOW about the MCG, let alone intended this semi-coincidence.

Also, Lionel Hutz Esq - I always thought that Matt's middle initial was J. I don't really have any justification for it, but so many of his characters also have J's for their middle names. (Homer J. Simpson, Phillip J. Fry, Bartholemew J. Simpson, Cubert J. Farnsworth, etc.) Still, who knows what his true middle name is - I just felt like bringing that up.  :)

I thought all his characters had J as their middle inital as a refrence to Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose?

They play cricket in my city, but I live in a very British Canadian city  :D

And I've read what boingo2000 mentioned as well, that the "J" is a tribute to Rocky and Bullwinkle.

That's my understanding too.  The J. is a tribute of Jay Wards characters.

Where are you at, Melly?  I assume they play up in Victoria and Vancover, in fact I think Seattle has a small club, but Canadian Television would rather show curling or darts (don't laugh, I've watched both) then cricket.

[thread hijack!] I am in Victoria, B.C., newly transplanted from the interior. It seems to be a very British city, plenty of import stores, old mini's, austins, and yes, cricket players too. We Canadians love curling too, it's actually a pretty fun game to play, ha ha. [/hijack]

I never said that non-Aussies didn't play cricket, I just said that they probably haven't heard of the MCG.

As for the "J" middle name thing, thanks for clearing that up with me. I always wondered why so many of his characters had that...

Well, Victoria thinks it's a suburb of London.  I love it though, although I haven't been up there for a few years, which is stupid since it is just a two hour drive and a boat ride away.  I should keep an eye out for when they are playing cricket next year, it would be fun to attend a game.

This thread has long since outlived it's usefulness.  Time to take Ol' Yeller out back.
