What happened to the Olympics between 2980 and 3003?  In Flight to Remember, Hermes is competing on the Earth team, but in Bend Her, he competes against Barbados Slim.  Is Barbados no longer part of Earth?  I don't get it.

I'd say they have another step to what we have now:
District
Country
Planet
Universe

uhh, kind of exactly like it is now...?
clearly hermes competed for the earth team against other planets in 2980, gave up limboing for 20 years+ and competed in the 500 meter limbo (different sport than before too) against other countries

Either:

(a) There are two different olympics (Earth Olympics and Universe Olympics), or

(b) A few countries decided not to join the global government. Probably England and a few other commonwealth countries (like Barbados), given current EU history....

Perhaps Barbados was lifted off the planet by a giant spaceship and taken to another planet. You never know.

Hermes and Barbados Slim could easily both have been on the "Earth" team.  Track & field events like the hypothetical limbo are not team sports, they're individual events.  So two guys from the same team can wind up competing against each other.
That doesn't explain all the national banners paraded onto the track beforehand, but most of those countries need not have been on earth anyway.

No, it's definitely just for Earthican nations - since it was definitely called the Earthican Olympiad, which is why you have Canada and Sweden among others, plus Jamican teams and obviously Barbados teams. You no doubt have Universal Olympics, perhaps competing in the same year, where the Earth team would come into it. Just look at the Earthican Olymics as the futuristic equivilant of the Commonwealth Games - I think.

In the middle of Indonesia, of course. After becoming independent from Indonesia, the new island nation of Java was immediately embroiled in a copyright battle with Sun Microsystems over their name, which they lost.

To avoid confusion with Colombia's new name ("Coffee--Honest" ) they chose to go with "Joe."

The colony on the Earth's star is called "Soland" for similar reasons (and because it sounds like "Poland," and the colonists went there at night to avoid the heat...).
