Owls replaced pigeons, they still have plenty of rats in NNY.

well um..  In the Epsiode S3E6 Bendless Love, when bender is sleep walking, you see some (owls) running out of a rat hole.

D-Con is a brand of rat poison sold in the US today with the slogan "Kills Rats Dead".  The similarity to the Def-Con "Kills Owls Dead" billboard in the opening sequence should remove all doubt.

DXC says in some commentary in 3ACV (can't remember which one, sorry!) that owls were brought in to kill the rats, but they forgot about it a couple times and put rats in by mistake.  Some rats run out of Bender's chef hat in 30% Iron Chef.

Rats could have possibly been anihlated from NNY but they could still exist in the ruins of Old New York and it is possible some could find their way to the surface

i'd go with the explanation that there are both rats and owls. but since owls live in holes in walls, rats must now nest in trees and fly the night sky eating other small rodents.

According to the commentary owls were brought in to kill rats, but they killed so many they became scavengers and became pests. Hence the owl traps. On a side note, on adult swim, they sometimes say "Futurama was brought to by Def Con Owl Traps" and an alternative "Family Guy was brought to you by Def Con Owl Tarps"

Here's another question about this episode which I've always wondered. In the sewers, Fry says; "This emotional display is making me nauseas, or maybe it’s whatever that is...", but we never actually get to see what exactly that is? When I first watched it on TV I was almost certain it was a cut for TV, but when I saw it on DVD it's not on there either. Anyone got any idea what it is? Is it something really obvious which I'm just not getting or what?...

I think its pretty much down to imagination really. I think its deliberatley done that way. Possibly a piece of crap or something like that. Afterall, they are in the sewers  ;)

But I think its open to interpretation, it can be whatever disgusting thing the viewer wants it to be  :)

Has anyone here noticed that when Dwayne is singing the song about El Chupanebre, you see Leela's parents on the top left corner of the screen? (they mention something on the Audio Commentary about there being a secret that will be revealed on a later episode, and that's what it is).

The question is: do you really wanna know? If it's disgusting enough to make Fry naseous, it'll kill lesser men.

Yes, that's been old news since June 2001.

@Teral, but the sketches i were refering to are in the Season 2 DVD Boxset, but leelas parents arn't formally introduced untill Season 4 (i think) They avoided saying they are leelas parents in the comentary of that episode but the specials on that disk reveal it?

i think someone screwed up, BIG TIME!

"Leela's Homeworld" premiered in February 2002, the Season 2 DVD's was released in November 2002, so it's not like it was a big secret anymore. 2ACV01 is our first glimpse of Leela's parents, so it makes sense for them to be on the season 2 set.

They may have "avoided" saying it was Leela's parents, but when you yell "SECRET!!" and the only difference is the appearence of two one-eyed mutants (which fans spotted right away back when ISTE aired), they might as well have said it.

In short, I don't think anyone screwed up.

2) Leela's Homeworld premieres

Rats can't just be totally anhilated by bringing in owls, some probably just escaped to old new york, bred and tried to return to the surface.

In the way that pigeons were replaced with owls, I thought rats were replaced with golden marmosets. Sure, you never see any, but they're apparently quite common. The guys in The Honking talk about them.

maybe the rat poison company was too lazy to redesign their box, or people remember it as rat poison...

In the U.K seson 2 was released when season 3 was finishing, maybe they forgot that U.K got them sooner than US?  :)

Not a huge thing, but...

The mutants rip the front of Leela's tank top (like so) But when she picks Nibbler up, it's fixed (like so).

I noticed that. But there's a scene in "300 Big Boys" where this woman behind the orphans at this whale show when Mushu is about to jump through the hoop, but when Mushu barfs, her dress changes to red. I think it's some sort of mood dress.

Similarly in "Raging Bender" a kid in the background of Fnog in Leela's flashback switches from brown to pink. However there is evidence that self repairing shirts exist, in "Cryonic Woman" a tea cup is droped that repairs itself.
