yeah and look where it got them.. do the ancient mayas have interstellar travel? do the sumerians have robots?   has anyone heard of the sumerians? not really

Did anyone see that episode of "The Simpsons" where Lisa showed Bart that magazine saying that scientists predicted that in a few millennia (or millions of years, can't remember) humans would grow another finger, and Bart commented, "Whoa, five fingers!"

Yes...although I've forgotten the name of it, and I don't have my episode guide to hand...

On another finger related piece of trivia, I only just noticed that in the Simpsons, God has five fingers, not four...

The sumerians were the earliest known people of the "fertile crescent". They lived in southern Mesopotamia in a number of independent city-states. Each consisted of a small city and its surrounding area. The rulers of these city-states constantly warred with one another. The sumerians are thought to by many conspiracy theorists to have been contacted by aliens, among other things.

If I remember in that episode, God had five at first then at the end when he met Homer again he had four.

no no no no no! GOD HAD FIVE FINGERS.
okay, i went and looked and in the ending scene, God's number of fingers changes from 4 to 5, then 4 then 5 again.
in the whole first scene though, he has five fingers at all times.
i am now mildly disappointed at what can only be described as an error when God has 4 fingers for two scenes

My flatmate just pointed out a possibility:
What if Futurama/Simpsons characters have 12 toes, but decided base 20 was just too big?

what?
i tell ya, that doesnt make a lick of sense
base 20 would mean they had 10 toes (fingers?) on each foot (hand?)
and its clear they dont have 12 toes... so i dont know where u are going with this

Well, they have 8 fingers.
My flatmate suggested they might have 12 toes.
Since 8+12=20 you might think they would at least consider base 20, but perhaps they decided it was too large and went for 10?

if u had heard the director's commentary in season 1, you'd know u're wrong
he says that they were going to draw them with 10 fingers but it just didnt look right.

If you look at the "You Gotta Do What You Gotta Do" poster behind Leela in SP3K, the miserable looking dude giving the thumbs up actually does have five fingers on that hand.

And I was also gonna bring up about the commentary too - it's the commentary for "Mars University" for anyone who cares - but my betters have already done so.

Sorry for that little interlude!

Its only because of the korean company that actually draw futurama did not let the characters have 10 fingers. 8 was apparently easier.

Matt Groening says in that commentary that it looked weird.  I guess it would do after however many years of working with 4-fingered characters on the Simpsons.

My Two Cents: They draw four fingers because it saves time. Just accept it. Just because they are drawn with four fingers doesn't mean they have four fingers. I could draw a picture of someone with two heads, they wouldn't actually have two heads.

It's a painting by Magritte of a pipe, which he insisted was not a pipe to his critics. When they gave up arguing he said "Ah, but it isn't a pipe - its paint arranged to look like a pipe.  It's a picture of a pipe, not a pipe."  Kind of similar to what Cube was saying.

What the hell is the matter with you people?  How can you like Futurama and blatantly ignore and disregard Matt Groening's words that come out of his mouth.
Futurama was going to be done in 5-finger format but it looked too weird to them and they changed it.  No one from Korea said "we're not drawing an extra two fingers, boss" and no one said "lets imply that they have five fingers by drawing 80% of them"
I guarantee that if the original cartoons from the Mickey Mouse era had five fingers, 99% of cartoons nowadays would have five.  Walt Disney is the foundation of all cartoons.

disney is also the foundation for manga and anime (according the the documentry 'the history of anime'). astroboy is a good example.

anyways, in my opinion the finger you have beside your small finger has no unique function.

with your thumb you can grab stuff more easily, with your forefinger you can poke/point, with your middle finger you can ..give people the finger and use the R2 and l2 buttons on a playstation and with your pinky you can pick your nose. What use is finger number 4? its not even as posable! thanks a f'in bunch god!

Feel the insanity!

There's no need for vitriol, JD - we're just throwing ideas up into the air - and if you care to actually read the rest of the thread, you'll notice that there's more than one post stating what you just said.  And in a civilised manner.

vitriol?!
its just that if you read the rest of the thread, u'd notice that i've restated that point several times and ppl keep ignoring it and writing crap.
dudefather> we just dont have a use for the ring finger YET
we didnt have a use for the middle finger before the use of the middle finger became normal, after some biker movie...  and no good use for it until the invention of the PS controller

fear the finger....

we can send a man to the moon and make spreadable butter-like-stuff, but mankind still needs to fully utilise all its available fingers.

perhaps it is an untaped resourse of great power, which is uncomprehended by man, perhaps in the distant future, when all hope is a forgotten dream, we will learn the ancient secrets ...of the finger..
