Doesn't Martha Stewart come from Nutley?

The residents don't look like Sal and Petunia, that's the weird thing.  It's an island of WASPish affluence in the middle of a few unpleasant towns where everyone looks like Sal and Petunia.  At least that's what it seems like from the outside.

And as far as I can tell, the 10:15 to Nutley wasn't actually a joke, just a shout out to Nutley.  It had to be a bus to somewhere.

What I don't get is in Less that Hero, when the mugger says, "I live in Jersey City and my car broke down and I need to get back 'cause my aunt's real sick and she needs this medicine but I need money for the bus," Fy says something like, "there's no bus to Jersey City."

What's that about?  There's buses to Jersey city, unless I'm smoking crack.  Also the PATH and the ferry.

Yep, Martha Stewart is from Nutley.  I couldn't really see a joke there, but I got the impression from others that it was.  Makes more sense as a shout out tho  :)  I don't understand about the whole "no bus to Jersey City" thing either.  There are definitely buses to there.  Not sure :?

Sure there are, in the year 2003.  But apparently not in 3003.

Or not on that day. I wouldn't put it past Fry to memorize the bus schedule...

No offence to Nixorbo or Kryten but I just plain hate New Jersey. If anything I say that New York and Philly are two of the only good things to happen to NJ. If NJ didn't have its beaches noone would have any reason to go there.

I also want to mention that I live in Pennsylvania, so of course I hate NJ. Around here, if there is a driver weaving in and out of traffic or speeding you can bet that they have an NJ plate

Dude, shut up.

And the thing is, if there are no buses to Jersey city in the future, fine, but why is that funny?

There are buses to Jersey City. Everyone knows that there are buses to Jersey City. Fry does not know this. Therefore, Fry is a complete idiot.

This is much like, "71st Street? Downtown could be anywhere!"

There's another possible joke in there. Some New Yorkers have such a pathological ignorance of all things Jersey that they either wouldn't know--or, better, would pretend not to know even during a life-and-death situation--that there was a bus to Jersey City. Something like this could have actually happened to someone they know.

Let me tell you a similar story that actually happened. Back in the mid-90's, I knew a girl who'd lived in Manhattan for over a decade, and I was visiting New York, and I wanted to meet up with her at a club in Hoboken. Her car was broken, so I told her to take the train. She said, "The subway doesn't go to Jersey." "Um... the PATH train." "What's that?" I had to meet up with her in Manhattan and take her with me on the PATH.

And a year later, this same girl was claiming that she'd never heard of the PATH, and that she'd never been to Hoboken. I could easily see her arguing with a mugger that there's no bus to Jersey City.

Hey NJ rocks, in fact it's got some of the best landscape in the country, NYC, now that's a real hellhole.
