In that case, it wouldn't be registered as a solely "Old Trek" gesture, and therefore not forbidden - unless it was realised that Fry was saying it to Nimoy. I don't suppose Nimoy featured in any "New Trek" episodes?

After reading this thread, I think I know how religion modify's itself. People go back and get pedantic and make things complicated in order to make sure everything still fits into their beliefs.

but in the first episode, fry goes up to Leonard and says do the thing!, and he acknowlodges this by saying 'i don't do that any more, not 'what are you talking about!!

Nimoy probably thought that was the quickest and easiest way to make Fry drop the subject. If he had said "What are you talking about?" Fry would've started to explain about the show and mentioned the words Star Trek. Nimoy saved Fry's ass from prison. That guy is a saint!!
