OK I was just watching Hell is Other Robots and I noticed that there was a woman in the crowd who looks like Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo at the Beastie Boys concert. See for yourselves.

Pretty sure that's a coincidence on the grounds that I've never heard of Tenchi Muyo and that if they were going to draw the character into an episode, it'd probably look a lot more like the character. I think they just wanted a generic music-y, punk-y type person who looks like they'd go to concerts.

Probably an unintentional resemblance, but GOOD CATCH!

I'll just... ooze... back out under the door now...

I guess that makes the woman next to her Ralph Wiggum, huh.

So is that Washu next to her in the pink?

...and Fry's actually Marty McFly! It all makes so much sense now.

I guess the professor is the professor and Bender is the delorean since he could time travel at one point.  I guess Futurama is totally ripped off.

Almost certainly a coincidence,  but if they did draw Ryoko into an episode that's pretty close to what she'd look like.

The first Futurama comic had a cameo appearance by Lum, so I guess anything's possible.

Agreed. (believe it or not) Given that Tenchi Muyo didn't even air on T.V. in the U.S. until a year after this episode was made it is highly unlikely that Matt Groening ever heard of it. However they already were selling video tapes and possibly DVD's of Tenchi Muyo in America in both Japanese and English so it's not completely unlikely. Which begs the question: is that extra's character design based off of her?

The answer to that question and all questions in life: Yes.

Also, are we seriously discussing the cultural relevance of Tenchi Muyo and its constructural ramifications on society?
