One thing that always bugs me when I see Into the Wild Green Yonder: When the Encyclopod shows an array of extinct animals, why oh why does he/she/it/schkler not show the cow, extinct as Amy Wong informed us in A Fishful of Dollars?! The first time I saw that scene, I thought "oh, now they'll show the cow, that's nice", and every time I see it I can't help but thinking "this is where they don't show the cow". WHY?!

Because if it showed every extinct animal in the history of the universe it would be longer than the movie.

Ofcourse. But I find the cow being extinct much more interesting than the dodo. If you choose a language extinct and featured in Futurama, would you choose French or Latin? A lost city, Atlanta or Lemuria?

Maybe they forgot, maybe they dont care. I for one side with the latter.
Just so you know you dont have to quote the last post, people will understand when its right above.

EDIT: Its not as if it was a big storyline or even relevant at all to the story it was just a throw away joke that was meant for a cheap laugh.

You don't seem to understand my first post; I never meant that they forgot or made a mistake, I merely spoke my mind on that specific scene. Ofcourse I agree it's not at all a big storyline.

I agree with Aki.The writers dumbed down this point by showing us 2 species that we all knew were extinct and 1 joke extinction, while they could have been more clever by including the cow.I only think cow was mentioned once as being extinct in a Fishful of Dollars.

I never meant that they forgot
I know I was saying that.

I was just saying that because it wasnt a big deal the writers may have forgot about it or didnt think it was important to include. The joke one that did get into the movie was dumbed down and wasnt funny and shouldnt have been there and cow would have been better than that (but anything would be) but its far from being a big deal that the cow wasnt there.

Anyway this is hardly worthy of its own thread, what do you want people to say? "Yes we agree where was the cow?"  Alright for a post but I certainly dont think its worthy of its own thread.

Okay then. I'll just start reporting to the mods instead.

As for the thread's subject: The Encyclopod ate the cow because beef is the most delicious substance in the Universe.

...why I hate being vegetarian! ;)

I really loved the cow thing when it was mentioned in A Fishful of Dollars... it's barely even a joke, but I kept laughing for minutes. That's probably why it immediatley struck me when I saw Yonder, and why I was so disappointed. And I love how Fry doesn't even care the cow being extinct, but he totally rages about the anschovy (spelling?).

I suspect that they were more concerned with not needlessly confusing people who didn't know (or didn't remember) that cows were supposed to be extinct than they were with pleasing those who did know.

But there are constant callbacks throughout the series - in my less geeky days I was often confused. Not to mention all the geek jokes.

Okay, I've changed my mind. The writers probably just forgot about cows being extinct. (How many time did it come up? I can only remember one comment by Amy.)

They probably just forgot about it after Amy's comment in A Fishful Of Dollars (i.e. it was a throwaway joke)

I suppose its also implied by the fact that buggalo are now the animal which get milked and farmed in herds.

Let's also not forget about the Angry Norwegian brand anchovies containing the very last anchovies in existence (other than the surprise tin we see by the Land Titanic in "The Mutants are Revolting.")

Fry: "Ok, my friends, get ready for the most delicious extinct animal you've ever tasted!"

I think this is the case. I know that there are constant callbacks for fans throughout the series, but they're never really things that would confuse people who don't get them -they're more just icing on the cake.

I don't think the writers forgot as they're pretty consistent at using buggalo instead of cows.

On a similar note - poodles. Farnsworth said they were extinct in Xmas Story, but they've popped up again and again. Only example I can think of is in The Mutants Are Revolting, but I know there are more and it makes me twitch every time. Which it shouldn't, but I'm a nerd.

Hmm, WailingFungus mentioned TMAR too. Do I love the episode less now?
...Nah.

The Mutants Are Revolting takes place after Into the Wild Green Yonder so the fact that we see a Poodle is in fact good continuity rather than a continuity error.

As for the Anchovies in TMAR, obviously no one knew they were down there and hence believed that the can in A Fishful of Dollars was the last can in existence.

Right. Gah, that's at least the second time today I didn't fully think things through before posting. You'd think I'd learn, but nope.

The Encyclopod wasn't around to store the poodle's DNA though. They'd been gone for thousands of years before ITWGY.

It was apparently around to store the DNA of Tasmanian Tigers which weren't extinct until some time in the 20th century.
